夢，科學研究的夢/ “谷哥点名”活动, Dream, A Science Research Dream

這是參加 @jubi 谷哥点名活动的帖,先感謝 @jubi 再次舉辦~ 上次有幸拿到第5名,今次當然要更努力~

“28歲前拿到博士學位”小伙子在大學舍堂迎新營當着一大羣學長前回答題問。

“我們在問你夢想!”

“目標和夢想也分不出？”

“夢想是成功率低,得集合天時地利人和才有機回成功的, 目標只是你給自己定下可行的方向”

“快回去想一下為什麼要入大學,入大學你是為了什麼?不要浪費入大學的機會”

小伙子在嘲駡聲中返回坐位......

28歲了,小伙子博士學位還沒拿到, 目標沒達成,不過夢想方向有了,其實只要不斷達成目標就可以引導到夢想成真。夢想是經過自己對自己有自知之明的分析,得出來的想法 ---我有低機率成為心目中的那個，在平行時空成功了的那一個....

小伙子的科學夢是找出對付超級抗藥性細菌的方法，每年數以萬人死於細菌感染。抗生素曾幾何時是對付細菌的靈丹妙藥，不過因為濫用, 誤用抗生素, 早期的靈丹妙藥有不少已經失效了。而因為抗生素和其他的藥物一樣有高昂的研發成本，但欠缺豐厚回報，各大藥廠大多放棄研發抗生素,並轉移注意力到富人病(心血管/血壓消膽固醇或抗癌藥)。引發了抗生素真空期因為欠缺新藥供應，一些超級抗藥性細菌已經能對市面上所有抗生素產生抵抗性。

小伙子的博士畢業論文已完成, 研究內容也是研發新藥對付超級抗藥性細菌。目標達成, 不過夢還是遙不可及。新藥一般也得花上十年時間表以及大量人手絕不是小伙子一人可以處理的。大量的安全測試, 化學改良,專利申請……

小伙子其實有一絲感謝那些學長當年的教訓。夢就是這樣的不實丶捉不緊、放不低，夢就是來追的!! 當天時地利人和條件都集齊，能夢想成真時，希望成果能幫到別人，能見證這個，我就滿足了~

“Receive my PhD title by the age of 28” Answered by a guy during the dorm orientation, in front of the seniors that asked the question.

“We are asking you about your dream”

“You cannot differentiate between goals and dreams?”

“Dreams are thing that happens with luck, with many factors that are not under your controls, goals are just directions for yourself.”

“ Go back to think why you came to the university, what was your aim? Don’t waste the precious opportunity of entering an university.”

The guy went back to his seat amid those critizing comments….

He was 28, the PhD title was still far form him, he didn’t accomplished his goal, but he had directions for his dream. Actually through different navigations and achieving different goals, this will guide you to your dream. Dream is a thorough knowing of thyself, where someone concludes that this is very difficult for me to succeed. --- I only got very little chance of becoming that person, that successful guy in the parallel universe.

The guy’s dream was to find ways to fight against the multidrug resistant bacteria, numerous people die each year due to bacterial infections. Antibiotics were once miracle drugs against bacterial infections. But due to excessive use, miss-use of the drugs, this miracle faded soon. And because of the costly research and development cost, big pharmaceuticals are giving up their research on novel antibiotics. Instead they focus their attention to rich people’s diseases (Cardiovascular/ lower cholesterol / anti-cancer drugs). This lead to the antibiotics void due to the diminishing of new drug supply, without the new antibiotics, some multidrug resistant bacteria can now resist against all commercially available antibiotics.

The guy has now finished his PhD thesis, with the content related to drug discoveries against multidrug resistant super bugs. He finally met his goal, but his dream was still far beyond reach. A new drug development to market takes easily over 10 years, with intensive labour, not something the guy could handle. Not to forgot the vast amount of safety, compound optimization, patents applications…

The guy was a little bit grateful for those harsh senior’s comments. Dream is always so insecure, so loosely bounded, hard to grasp onto or let it go, dreams are for catching. When conditions are right, dream comes true, and I hope the result of his dream can help someone, someday. It would be my pleasure to witness this dream to come true.
