Santa Maria de Idris & San Giovanni in Monterrone Rock Church. Matera, Italy
The Rock Churches of Matera, constructed mainly in the Middle Ages, are carved into the rock. Can you believe that there are more than 150 rock churches in Matera?
This church of the Madonna de Idris or Santa Maria de Idris is located to the top of the large limestone cliff Monterrone (Errone Mount) and is totally curved into the rock.

The name derives from the greek word Odigitria (Idris Hodegetria, it who shows the way), or the water that gushed from the rock.
2
Its facade was rebuilt about in the fifteenth century because the church had a collapse. The interior consists of one nave with some frescoes, most of which are detached for restoration being deteriorated due to moisture and kept at the Historical and Artistic Heritage Office of Matera.

Wow! It's a truly beautiful city, I'd love to visit it. It must be really atmospheric to walk along the streets there. And very romantic as well :)
Matera will be a Europian Capital of Culture 2019. It made a long and icredible way from one of a poorest cities of Italy to nowadays.
It very much worth to visit!
