Travel - Visiting Thera (Fira) on the Greek Isle of Santorini
If you ever take a Mediterranean Cruise, you might get to visit Santorini in the Greek Isles. It’s likely you’ve seen Santorini’s beautiful Cycladic architecture. if you visit Santorini by cruise ship, you are likely to visit the island through the city of Thera, sitting high on a cliff above the port.
The cruise ships come into the bay near the main port and you’ll take a ferry from your ship to the port.
Once you get to the port, you have two choices for getting to Thera at the top of the cliff.
The first is a winding walking trail that zig zags up the cliff.
There is a donkey ride option up the trail as well, so understanding that where there are donkeys, there is donkey poop, my family decided to skip the hike and take option two, the cable car. Expect to stand in a long line, but you’ll get to the top with clean shoes and energy saved to wander around Thera.
Once you get to the top, it is well worth it. First, the Cycladic architecture is mostly white with some pastel colored stucco buildings mixed in and stacked cliffside one after another.
We had a wonderful lunch chatting with a local restaurant owner and his family, visited a black sand beach on the other side of the island, and wandered the shops of Thera before taking the cable ride back down to the port.

Wow, Greek really has some beautiful land- and cityscapes for sure. I saw pictures of Santorini before but now as I saw your pictures I get the feeling I would love to take a cruise ship too to get to all the different places in the world :) The sad part with cruise ships is that you don't have too much time in every city where you let go anchor. But still I would love to make this experience at least once :)
Thanks! Cruises are a good way to sample different countries and cities so you can decide where you might want to come back and spend more time. Santorini is one of those places that would be good to spend several days.
Yes I think so too. My impression so far about Santorini is definitely that it is a place where you want to stay much longer then just some days :D
Oooo... that looks like a very great place to visit. I am not too sure of the donkey ride option but it cant be any worse than a horse right???
I’m not much of an equestrian either.
My husband works with horses all day.. i love petting them and taking selfies with them tho...
Beautiful animals, but I prefer to pet them with my feet on the ground. 😁

Fantastic shots and what a beautiful place
I would take the hike, probably even now with my breathing issues, but I am fine with heights even climbing and building up to 400 foot telecommunications towers, but after just barely missing being in a cable car that crashed in Singapore I have a phobia with Cable Cars and will avoid them wehere ever possible
Thanks. I love to hike and my wife and I do some hilly terrain. The hike would probably be pretty with the sights that you would see along the way. Our time was limited so the cable car was the most expeditious way up.
I have always been fascinated by the colourful buildings in Greece, it's an amazing place to visit and your photo's more then do it justice. I particularly like the second to last photo - where on earth were you when you took this hot - it seems almost like you were floating high above the cliffs.

Thanks. The second shot was at the top of some steps that went down from the rooftop seating area of Cafe Classico. I like that shot because of the flowers and the yellow stucco walls of the building.
