"The Green Hornet" by Michel Gondry - movie review

in #cinema6 years ago (edited)

The Rich Playboy Brit Reed (Rowan) is not excited about anything else in life except women and parties. One day, after the death of his father James Reed (Tom Wilkinson), a respected newspaper publisher and public figure, Brit emerges as a media empire he does not want to have anything to do with. However, the new circumstances in his life meet him with Kate (Jay Chow), an employee of his father who mildly wasting his extraordinary technical and physical talent. They quickly become friends and discover the opportunity to do something meaningful with their lives. They decide to fight evil by turning themselves into criminals in the eyes of the public. So they turn into the masked hero Green Hornet and his assistant ...

The movie may be a fantasmagoria such as Spiderman or X-Men, may well be in the reality of the Dark Knight, or it may be quite different. You just have to make some more famous comic heroes to convince yourself of the huge thematic possibilities. I was personally expecting a typical studio film with a more artistic approach, with the frequent use of the visual techniques made by director Michel Gondry's trademark, something like Ang Lee's Hulk, admirably suited to Seth Roggen's typical humor . The film, however, was closer to the Kick ass" - light and fun, and which is the best, is not taken seriously. And this can only be a giant plus because it's just impossible to otherwise assume Rogen as a superhero, even if he's as lean as Brit Reed. As for Gordry's idiosyncratic visual styling, it is almost lacking, but the moments in which it appears in one form or another are really impressive. Here I have to mention those who worried that he would not be able to deal with the action, that these episodes - chases and especially fights - are one of the most original and distinctive things in the movie. The delay of time, the fixing of the weapons ... , it's them. In contrast, however, in "Green Hornets", there are hardly any serious issues and social and cultural comments about the degradation of modern society. Of course, I can not say that they are totally missing, on the contrary, the corruption of the media, the decline of the Psychedelic way of life and, of course, a little "daddy issues", because of where an American film without them? They are simply presented in a very superficial way, but the purpose of the film is not to engage you intellectually. At this level, the only topic that caught me interested and which appears in the first reincarnation of the "Green Hornet" (on a radio show) is the one about the decision of the heroes to fight crime by turning themselves into criminals themselves , but not in the sense of the so-called "vigilante" or all other superheroes declared out of law, such as Batman, for example. Personally, this seems to me to be an interesting psychological moment against the backdrop of all other superheroids. Unfortunately, this idea is explained to us in a straightforward text, and so we are deprived of the opportunity to experience the intellectual pleasure of getting to it. Another thing that comes to me is that Brit almost does not change as a hero. He is stupid, spoiled and irresponsible in the beginning and, in general, he is left at the end. Amman of the realization of the moral, civil and any other debts there.

I think I was too much in philosophizing on a film that for a second has not set a goal other than to entertain - we who are watching it and obviously the authors who have taken it. So last few words about the actors. I think here Seth Rogen will appeal even to those who can not tolerate it because his role fits. Besides, of course, if you have not been a fan of Hornet's radio version. In that case, you will probably hate him. Cameron Diaz will not comment on her, she's just tragic lately. Tom Wilkinson, as always, is at the top, and Christopher Waltz as the paranoid superstar Chudovski is a giant creature. I want to distinguish Jay Chow as Keith. A funny and charismatic man, whom I'm sure, is expecting even greater success. But my award for best role goes to James Franco, who was absent in the captions, who just split in for two minutes as a criminal owner who has allowed himself to open a super-duop turbo club without Mr. Chudovsky's blessing. Cruel! "Green Hornets" is a surprisingly nice film - funny, with excellent action scenes - and although there are a few scenario problems and exploring mostly known territories, the end result is stylish and satisfying.
