GREED!: Of Politicians, Prophets and Prostitutes 1

Greed is the dream to beat and beating it comes with series of heartbreaks, scheming, deaths, lies, terror, deliberate betrayal and then the added perks.GREED.jpg
You get rewarded for doing the evil and get punished with poverty and other vices when you do the good.
The world is said to be ruled by the prince of darkness and he has become aware of man’s lust for the goodies of life and has taken it upon himself to make sure man gets what he wants but at a small prize. It is usually a very big reward for a “small” prize to pay.

Greed is known to be bad because during my more civilized years as a teen growing up in the village with my parents, extended family, neighbours and friends, I was always admonished on the dangers that greed is and that time, it was said that I was always exhibiting traits of greed and that could lead me astray. 30 years down the line I am yet to be greedy and sometimes wished I didn’t live life too careful because my not being greedy has not paid off in any way. Yes you may say a good name is better than silver and gold but then I will ask you this one question; what is a good name without silver and gold? What should be used to write a good name? isn’t a good name supposed to be decked with costly pearls, silver, gold and the most priciest ornaments?

My father was and still is one of the most sincere, truthful, trustworthy, God fearing, right living and good doing individual I have ever known and that is not because he is my father, not because people talk about his sincerity and selfless service to humanity and God, not because he will never be caught doing wrong, but because he is a poor man and after over 66years of being the good man, he still finds it hard to feed once a day. He never played on greed and was quick to avoid anything that will soil his name and his father’s.
He was not a “born again” Christian then when I was a growing up, but he was a dedicated member of the Anglican Church and served in the capacity of the People’s Warden and as the Treasurer. He also served as the chairman of the LGAs development commission for a period of 2 years and returned back to penury when he was kicked out by the people who felt he wasn’t being “smart” enough and was making it impossible for them to get their own share of the national cake.
Before then, he worked as a sales man with Hoechst, a pharmaceutical company back then which only people who were born before the 70s 80s and lived in the 80s may remember and as the story goes, he was kicked out because he was framed by someone who was more “ambitious” than he was and years after, he is unable to get a decent meal on his plate without struggle.

Being a Christian in those days meant being dedicated to God and his church, being a Christian before the advent of the Pentecostal assembly meant one thing then, be seen as the man that everyone can vouch for because you are seen as having a right standing with God and men and my Father was just that.
He would never cheat on anyone, he would never use insulting words, he would never talk to anyone to influence things his way or even offer a bribe to have something tilted his way and whenever such positions are presented him, he is kicked out because he failed to be the smart man in the office and was busy guiding the resources of the government for the government instead of looking out for himself and the people who worked tirelessly.
He was always ready to sacrifice his bit to help those in need and will never want to be seen as having done too much”.

Greed never took centre stage in his life and I wish it did and I am sure that sometimes whenever he goes through difficulties and finding it hard to eat, he would wish he did play a fast one but then it is too late.
Now all he does is pray and wish God will answer, and that praying has gone on for over 20 years and I ask myself sometimes, "What if he has exhausted the prayers allocated him in this lifetime?"
"What if he will never be rich ever again and may only be reminded of what could have been if only he did play a “smart” card when he had the chance?"
"What if honesty never pays and for those taking that ride, fools milk will remain their portion?"
"What if there is nothing like greed being bad and honesty being good?"

What if the saying is, Greed is the best policy and that the “honest ones” missed the words from the start?

Nice inspirational post. Will be waiting for the continuation of your post. In any way, greed is one of the temptation in life that is hard to resist specially when one is in power. I admire your father for not falling into this temptation and preserving his good name in the society he's in. And yes, i agree with you saying, what is in a name where there is no gold or silver. But truth to the matter is,even without gold or silver, there is trustworthiness, honesty, integrity, and humbleness that goes with your name.

Thanks for reading and for the thought pattern you have concerning the whole living right. Next post is already out and hope you enjoy it too.
