Daily Bible Reading (Prayer & Reflection) The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath

in #christianity7 years ago (edited)

In today's Bible reading Jesus is clearly telling us that He is Lord. And our Lord Jesus is demanding mercy not sacrifice from us. What does it mean to be merciful?

Matthew 12:1-8
The Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath

Jesus was going through a field of grain on the sabbath.
His disciples were hungry
and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them.
When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him,
"See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath."
He said to the them, "Have you not read what David did
when he and his companions were hungry,
how he went into the house of God and ate the bread of offering,
which neither he nor his companions
but only the priests could lawfully eat?
Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath
the priests serving in the temple violate the sabbath
and are innocent?
I say to you, something greater than the temple is here.
If you knew what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice,
you would not have condemned these innocent men.
For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath."

Prayer reflection

Oh Jesus, you who are love and mercy itself please grant us hearts full of mercy. May we love our neighbor as we love ourselves. You are our merciful savior. Teach us to be merciful like you.

What does it mean to be merciful?

For me it is easy to forgive. As long as someone apologizes first. But it is often difficult for me to forgive someone when they are not sorry. But Jesus prayed to the Father, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." Jesus is showing us what it means to be merciful to those that hurt us.

How else has Jesus shown us to be merciful? What are some of the lessons you have learned and how are you learning to be merciful to those around you?

Jesus loves you! Let us love one another.

You are a child of God. Remember you are loved.

Have a beautiful day full of love. May God continue to bless you abundantly. May we always recognize that we are blessed.

Greet everyone who a smile and love and be a witness to Jesus Christ in this way. Christ's light shining in you is what will convert the world.

Thanks @drstevegilbert, have a wonderful weekend!

so Jzs broke the Shabbat and called himself 'the lord of shabbat'? That's like burning the turkey and declaring oneself a 'Top chef'.

You come close to Go'd by PRACTICING the laws Go'd gave, not by transgressing them!
Go'd commanded us to cease work on shabbat. That includes not harvesting grain on shabbat, something that Jzs allowed his followers to do.

But the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him? (Luke 13:15)

what does it have to do with plucking grain on shabbat?

We keep the Sabbath holy by keeping the first commandment.

"Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God, The Lord is One; Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind."

By placing God in the first place of our lives and worshipping God with all of our hearts, mind, soul, and strength we keep the Sabbath holy.

That is the commandment given by God. There is nothing in the Commandments about plucking grain.

Jesus said, "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. (Matthew 5:17)

keeping shabbat holy is a specific commandment involving not doing any labor or lighting fire.

That is not a commandment. It is part of the law of Moses.

The Ten Commandments were placed inside the ark of the covenant.
The book of the law (600+ laws) , and put it in the side of the ark of the
covenant.

The Torah explicitly prohibits lighting a fire ( Exodus 35:23) and field work such as plowing and harvesting (Exodus 34:20) on Shabbat.

How does one 'fulfill' shabbat by ignoring its laws?

Amazing dear in Christ, thank you so much for this. I want to invite you to enjoy this prayer too: https://steemit.com/christian-trail/@pastorlea/here-is-your-prayer-to-god
