The one who loves us the most, teaches us to do something we hate the most. In Mathew 5:44 Jesus said, “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. “In other words Jesus teaches us to forgive those who have done wrong to us. But we disagree and cry out, “No way! The harm caused to me, is too much for me to forgive and forget!” or , “Why would I forget. The offernder hasn’t even apologized at all! He/she doesn’t deserved forgiveness”

Colossians 3:13 - Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

The big question is, why does God want His children to choose to forgive? The answer is found in the Scriptures. Reading the third chapter of Colossians is like looking at oneself using a spiritual mirror. It shows who you are, not that you are made alive in Christ. It gives you a fresh and solid point of view, absolutely unlike from how you most likely would think and conduct yourself. It is said in Colossians 3:12-13 “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe your selves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” God could have continued to treat us as enemies but He chose to offer forgiveness. He allowed His only Son Jesus to die on the cross to fully pay the debt owe.

Matthew 6:14 - For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

As a Christian, we are made holy, loved and forgiven purely out of God’s grace. This has nothing to do with our feat in this world. This amount of favor and kind treatment we’ve received from God should compel us to choose to forgive the way He did.

Luke 17:3 - So watch yourselves. “If your brother or sistersins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

Forgiveness fact: “People who maintain some criteria that must be satisfied before they forgive experienced a higher risk for mortality that those who forgive unconditionally. Conditional forgiveness keeps one at the mercy of the offender to satisfy those demands. Such as demands for apologies, amends, and assurances of change over which the victim has no control.”

Acts 3:19 - Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

Unforgiveness focus on the past and keeps people bound to living in the past. The process of forgiveness frees a person to focus on the present and the future” – Dr. Geoffrey Sutton(Psychology of Forgiveness, 2014).
