Hal Lindsey's "There's a New World Coming": 33 pages of concentrated insanity

in #christianity8 years ago (edited)

What follows is a comic book illustrated by one of the artists responsible for Archie comics of that period, and written by Hal Lindsey. Mr. Lindsey made his living publishing numerous books predicting an imminent supernatural end of the world, mapping contemporary events during the Cold War to story elements from the Book of Revelations. He's better known as the fellow behind the bizarre Hansi: The Girl Who Loved the Swastika. Without further delay:

No human history before the Old Testament. Yeah, no that's...that's fine. That's alright, carry on.

No comment on last panel

For some reason, that bit about atoms wasn't in my science textbooks. I wonder if Stephen Hawking has been informed of this astonishing fact.

If plagues, famine and war seem familiar and topical, it may be because they have occurred throughout human history.

Economic disaster is another common event apparently unique to the end times

At the time this was written, the cold war was going strong and it was taken for granted that there would be a nuclear exchange between the US and the USSR.

It truly is a baffling mystery why German Christians hated Jews so intensely.

Disappointingly, none of the Fallout games to date have ended with the return of Christ.

Locusts can mean tandem rotor military helicopters if you squint, believe, and use your i m a g i n a t i on

Won't they be disappointed when they find out that's just Kenny Loggins in a bath robe

Believe what I want you to, and you'll receive an amazing reward. But I can't prove it exists, because it's after you die. If you don't believe, you'll receive a horrible punishment. Also unfalsifiable. Hey I don't make the rules buddy, nothing about this is suspect.

Incidentally, the above is my favorite page because of the panel with the wide, glazed over eyes on the girl saying "It all fits together perfectly". Of course it does. Of course.

Anyway that's it. You may have seen this before, reposted around the internet on various other blogs. Lindsey's work isn't as well known as Jack Chick's (of Chick Tract notoriety) but his work provides a no less valuable insight into the psychology of apocalyptic belief. You can read my own take on Biblical claims of an imminent apocalypse in this article.

When was this comic published ? It must be quite vintage at 39c!

They were 12 cents when I was buying my Superman collection in the 60's...

The Comic Book Price Guide is on my other partition in Windows or I would look up the value of this one. It was cool to read tho :)

Depending where you live, the majority of people in your community may well believe the contents of this comic to be true. Let that soak in for a minute.

I have a home in Las Vegas and a home in Nebraska. Which one do you think would view this as fact and which one as fiction?

I don't know much about the demographics of Vegas or Nebraska. But I do know that 46% of Americans hold young earth creationist views.

As Christians are 75-80% of Americans, the subset of American Christians that hold creationist views is around 60~%. (The question was worded: “Do you believe that all life on Earth appeared in its present form some time within the last 10,000 years?”)

I would wager that the overlap between YECs and the rapture-ready crowd is near total.

It's a brave new world.
