I am looking at the stages of marriage.

The cooperation stage lasts between 10 to 20 years. Suddenly the children are grown up, finances are good and careers is in a very good place. Children start to leave home and then suddenly your are entering a whole new phase. Some women and some men may experience the empty nest syndrome. This is where parents experience feelings of sadness and loss when their children leave home. That is why is very important for parents during the cooperation years to not concentrate all your attention on the children. It is important to still have a life, hobbies etc. apart from just raising kids.

Couples that still maintained their relationship during the cooperation years find that this is a time to appreciate each other again. This can be a whole new adventure like when you first got married. Couples can rediscover each other as lovers and friends. You have the house back to yourself and new freedom. If your sex life became boring and predictable, then now is the time to spice it up. (i will cover this in coming Love and Marriage posts).Couples can start doing things that there was never money or time for while they were raising children.

Another wonderful experience of this phase is seeing your children become adults, completes their studies and start their adult life. Becoming grandparents is for most parents very exciting and grandchildren bring joy in their life for years to come.

The downside of this stage of marriage can be problems arising from middle age and health problems. This need to be managed to maintain a happy relationship.
