The motto of today is "One position, two questions!"
Playing with the white pieces I reached the position below in an internet blitz chess game. My situation didn't look very promising at the first glance, but I had prepared a surprising move for my opponent. My two questions are now:

  1. What did I play? (Find the best move for white!)

  2. Was black lost after that, and if not, how could he strike back?

Have fun! :)

  1. Was spielte ich? (Finde den besten Zug für Weiß!)

  2. War Schwarz danach verloren, und falls nicht, wie sah dann sein Konter aus?

Viel Spaß! :)

White to move: / Weiß am Zug:

Sort:
  1. You played 1. Qxa7 (idea Rxa7 2. Rf8 mate.
  2. The counter was: 1. ...Knight f3 check. Idea: If 2.Rxf3 then Qe1+, if 2.Tf1 then Qxf1 and taking the queen on a7 thereafter; if Kh2 then Qh4 with perpetual.

Congrats, you are the winner of this round!

You answered both questions absolutely correctly!

  1. Qxa7 (threatening Qg7#; and, as you wrote, black cannot play Rxa7 because of Rf8#)

  2. Black's only but sufficient answer was 1. ... Nf3+; white cannot play 2. Bxf3 or gxf3 because of Rxa7 - and after 2. Rxf3 follows Qe1+ with perpetual check as you pointed out.

Two really clever and exciting moves made the game end in a fair draw. :)

Very interesting contest :-) thanks for that challenge.

I guess queen eats the pawn below the rook at a7 threatening checkmate with your rook to f8 if he eats the queen? So he has to bring his
queen at d8 for protection.. sorry for not speaking chess language properly :p

Edit: pfff too late again

and now I saw the counter in the solution and feel like a retard

Qxb7 looks decisive.

If rook takes, then Rf8#.

If rook doesn't take, then checkmate is soon to come with white's queen controlling the back ranks., either by way of Qxa8# or Qg7#.

I guess I know what you mean, but ... 1. Qxb7 is not possible! :)

Woops. After all those edits, you'd think that I would have caught that, lol. All of my attention went into trying to put down the correct notations.

I meant Qxa7.

I know: congrats to you, too: you found the best white move!
But did you see that @iceblue also found the amazing defense for black? I didn't win that game because of that annoying (great) black move. :-)

That's my problem sometimes. I'm too geared towards my attack and don't think the opponent's defense through enough. My first thought was that black had, at best, a delayed checkmate coming by Queen sac check on f2, h2, or h1. That conclusion, after giving it maybe 3 or 4 seconds of thought.

Great move Congratulation for the winner

Thank you :-)

At the beginning the game will start like a play, mostly when you are new in it, sometimes confusing, but with a maximum calculation and wisdom, you can beat the trio. But lets always remember that a game is a game, neither you loose or you win. Focusing on the opponent sometimes doesn't save the player but rather concentrating mostly on your own plan. Nice post @jakio1 wishing to get more from you, as am NEW here with you

Got the move ;)

Not so great but seems like i would go through comments for the answers ;)
