Chess Lessons for Beginners #4 - The Fool's Mate

in #chess7 years ago (edited)

Today I have a very short but hopefully impactful lesson for my steemit chess beginner friends. For today's lesson, let's learn about the infamous fool's mate - the fastest checkmate in chess.

Last week, I covered some basic principles of chess openings, particularly the importance of the center of the board.

King safety is of utmost importance in chess, as what happens if you lose your king in this game?

You lose!

The fool's mate is something that you cannot really plan for. Really, your opponent has to self-destruct by making two horrible, no-good, very bad moves in a row.

Let's Be Foolish!

Here's what it looks like.

Checkmate! White is a fool.

The fool's mate usually starts with white making a horrible move of pawn to f3. This move unnecessarily weakens the king side. King safety is key in chess.

Black responds by making a strong move, pawn to e5. This stakes a claim in the center and also allows the queen and bishop to come out.

White follows up his first bad move with an absolutely terrible suicidal second move, pawn to g4.

Notice how there is now a direct route to white's king and how he is stuck. All black has to do is to hit the diagonal from h4 to e1 and white's king will have nowhere to go.

Queen to h4. Checkmate.

Of course, both players can blunder into this. It actually takes 3 moves as white to deliver the fool's mate.

Don't be a fool. Now, go play some chess!

That's it for this lesson today. I hope you enjoyed it and please upvote and follow me for more beginner's chess lessons on steemit!

When i first learned Chess and learned about Fools Mate, i akways tried for it ! Ha ha... but like you say, the opponent has to expose their King early too.

Haha, yep not really something you can do but rather something your opponent has to do to himself ;)
