Sort:  

The electron configuration of iron is: [Ar] 4s2 3d6.

  • 4s2 is not stable: the electrons can be given away easily so we get Fe2+.
  • 3d6 is not stable: another electron can be given away and as a result we get Fe3+.

After that we have a stable configuration: [Ar] 4s0 3d5. Argon is stable (the octet); d5 is stable as well (half full d-orbital).

Yep, obviously, a chemist at heart, if not in profession.
