OmiseGo and Ethereum Founder Vitalik Donate $1 million To Charity in Uganda story by TechCrunch

in #charity6 years ago

This week has been really great for the crypto community in my country Uganda.I love the way crypto is gaining momentum here despite the dwindling prices!

There were great articles by Washington Post and Aljazeera highlighting of how Bitcoin adoption is massively increasing in Uganda especially in the capital city Kampala.I summarised these two stories in my Steemit post which you can find here.

As i was still digesting the great news of the massive Bitcoin adoption in Uganda,i find more great news today by TechCrunch of how $1m was donated to refugee NGO here!.

It must be known that Africa has very many charity organisations helping out the people, and most times the aid or help does not reach to the people at the ground level! I am an Afican and seen this happen.

It must also be noted that cryptocurrency has faced a lot of criticism for not helping the world,as skeptics say it only exists in digital form i.e. coins! This is always said by people who do not understand crypto. It is on this basis of criticism that OmiseGO contributed together with Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin have donated $1million ...yes 1 million to a charity organisation called givedirectly to help out in the influx of refugees in Uganda.

It has also to be noted and known that my country Uganda has the best reception to refugees in the world! We currently have an influx of over 20000 refugees fleeing tribal conflicts in Congo.
You can make a simple Google search on Uganda refugees situation and read more by yourself.

What is this Give Directly?

You must now be wondering which company is this that has got lucky to reciveve the $1million !
Let me quote directly from their website

Send money directly to people living in extreme poverty

The organisation helps send money to the extreme poor.

Every month, thousands of people receive unconditional cash transfers from GiveDirectly that transform their lives.

You can read more about give directly from their website ,they are really doing a great job helping Africa and may be you can be among the donors who can help save lives here in Uganda.

This is among the first charities I have read that accept donations in crypto....isn't that interesting news for the crypto community.
I just went through the website and indeed crypto is accepted as shown below in this screenshot!

Give directly is backed by many companies like Google.org, Givewell and others.
The recipients who are the extreme poor will not receive crypto as some of you were thinking! The crypto will be converted into fiat which is sent to the recipients using a service we call here mobile money.

OmiseGo and Vitalik $1m donation

OmiseGO (OMG)is a blockchain solution that aims to deliver financial freedom to the world’s masses by removing the need to have intermediaries.

By giving the donation to Give Directly, OmiseGO is furthering its own commitment to using blockchain technology to change the world. This is really a great step for the crypto community.
When asked about this gesture, Jun Hasegawa, the founder of OmiseGO had the following to say:

A good gesture for all of the cryptocurrency

I am very happy for the gesture of OmiseGo and the Ethereum founder Vitalik of donating the $1million in crypto to my country Uganda.Let this open many people's eyes on the practicalities of crypto.

I ask you to read more of this interesting story in the links below.
