Support for Schools in Turkey, as well as Iraq and Syria

in #charity6 years ago (edited)

Every month I try to ship an educational support package to Turkey. Sometimes I am able to send an additional package to Iraq or Syria.
These packages contain a variety of items ranging from jotters (notepads) to teaching supplies, typically the basics to support schools with teaching kids.Depending on whats being shipped a package can contain enough support to help 200 kids each month.

Last month such a package arrived in Kirsehir, Turkey for Refugee and local kids. With almost 5 million refugees in Turkey, the local infrastructure has taken a massive hit and services have at times struggled to cope. What I am trying to do is alleviate the strain in about 10 areas, as some school lack the basics such as pencils or paper.

Education is important to us all, we should never stop learning or expanding our own boundaries. The wounds of the recent conflicts in the Middle East will take at least a generation to heal, it will require many things but education is a core requirement.

In the age of agendas, MSN, and politiking it can be easy to forget the very human tragediy which is going on at the moment and it can also be very easy to post a social media post about the tragediy in an effort to garner 'likes' but those 'likes' mean nothing, actions will always count more than words!
Just like the Balkans, the wounds in this region will take a long time to heal.

The cost of each package isnt that much, as items are bought in bulk. For example 100 jotters can cost about £15, 500 pencils cost roughly £17. The biggest single cost is shipping and tax which is about £60-ish for 30kgs.
Simularly with the Books and Bears campaign items dont cost that much as the 'soft toys' are bought in bulk or second hand.
However, it does greatly concern me when I see how much some charities have collected and how little they have achieved.

The next package is due to leave at the end of March. However, I am just an individual who is without support, media coverage or any backing. Apparently some have taken umbrage at my stance of believing that its best for the Refugees to stay in the Middle East and eventually return to rebuild their homes.
