A Romanian (me) in Germany

So as reaching the 3rd day of the 30 day writing challenge, I will write the post in 3 different languages, English, so that most of the users get what I want to tell about, Romanian, as my native language and German, the language of the country I live in and what is the post about. Each language will have a unicity to it, so I will mostly adapt the content to make sense. It is the first episode of the project which was inspired by @teodora’s postand describes my journey in this interesting and beautiful country called Germany.

So, jetzt sind wir beim 3ten Tag des Posting Challenge. Für dieses Projekt, „Ein Rumäne in Deutschland“, werde ich auf 3 Sprachen schreiben, erstmal English damit ich von den meisten hier verstanden werde, Deutsch als die Sprache des Landes was mich aufgenommen hat und wo ich lebe und Rumänisch, meine Muttersprache. Sinn wird fast gleich sein, aber der Ausdruck und die Wörter nicht. Das Projekt bezieht sich auf @teodora’s post und wird meine Reise in diesem Land namens Deutschland, was so interessant ist und wunderbar ist.

Așa, am ajuns la ziua a treia din provocarea celor 30 de zile de postări. Am să scriu în 3 limbi, în engleză, să înțeleagă cam aproape toți de pe steem, în română, deoarece este limba mea maternă și în germană deoarece este limba țării mele adoptive. Nu au să fie egale traducerile, ci au să aibă sens comun, deoarece expresile sunt diferite. Proiectul se bazeză pe postarea Teodorei. Voi descrie din drumul meu din Germania, o țară interesantă și frumoasă.

4 years ago, I moved to Germany. Why? Because I wanted to leverage the things I know. How to leverage them in Germany? By being better paid then in Romania, which was a no-brainer at that given time. How it came to that? Before the winter of 2012-2013 the regulation of the gas bill came. I had to pay more than half of my income for that month. This and the thing that at the end of that month, one day before salary, I did not have any money to pay for water at a movie. I said, you know what, I’m sick next head hunter that tries to get me to move to another country has my ears open. 1 week later somebody internally at the company where I worked, wanted me to move to Dortmund, Germany, as they searched someone for an Italian client, who could speak German, English, Romanian and some Italian. On linkedin there were not so many candidates matching with the engineering skills needed.

Vor 4 Jahren bin ich nach Deutschland gezogen. Warum? Weil ich die Dinge, die ich kenne, hebeln möchte. Wie kann man diese in Deutschland hebeln? Weil man in Deutschland viel besser bezahlt war zu dem Zeitpunkt, war das die offensichtliche Entscheidung. Wie kam es dazu? Vor dem Winter 2012-2013 kam die Regulierung der Gasrechnung. Ich musste mehr als die Hälfte meines Einkommens für diesen Monat bezahlen. Dies und die Sache, das am Ende dieses Monats, ein Tag vor dem Gehalt, hatte ich kein Geld für ein Wasser in Kino zu bezahlen. Ich sagte mir, weißt du was, ich bin satt, nächster Head-Hunter, der versucht mich anzuwerben, um in ein anderes Land zu ziehen, hat meine Ohren offen. 1 Woche später, jemand in der Firma wo ich arbeitete, wollte das ich nach Dortmund ziehen. Er suchte jemanden, der Deutsch, Englisch, rumänisch und etwas Italienisch spricht für einen Italienischen Kunden. Auf linkedin gab es nicht so viele Kandidaten, die, die Sprachen sprachen und auch die nötigen Ingenieurkenntnissen mitbringen konnten.

Acum 4 ani, m-am mutat în Germania, de ce? Pentru că am vrut să folosesc lucrurile pe care le cunosc în avantajul meu. De ce să le folosesc în Germania și nu în România? Fiind plătit cu mult mai bine atunci în Germania, alegerea nu a fost destul de grea. Cum am ajuns să vreau? Înainte de iarnă din 2012-2013 a venit regularizarea(ce cuvânt ironic) la gaz. A trebuit să plătesc mai mult de jumătate din venitul meu pentru acea lună. Acest lucru și faptul că la sfârșitul acelei luni, cu o zi înainte de salariu, nu aveam bani să plătesc pentru apă la un film. Am spus, știi ce, la următorul head-hunter care încearcă să mă recruteze pentru străinătate, am să spun da. O săptămână mai târziu, cineva intern de la compania unde am lucrat, a dorit să mă mut în Dortmund, Germania. Căutau pentru cun client Italian cineva care putea să vorbească germană, engleză, română și italiană. Pe linkedin nu au fost atât de mulți candidați care se potriveau și cu cerințele tehnice inginerești necesare.

So in March I put my house on sale, packed my belongings in the small car I had and said goodbye to Romania. I crossed the border between Austria and Germany somewhere before midnight. A police patrol in a civil 5-series stopped me. They wanted me to unpack the car. I said, in a not polite manner, I do it, but only if they help me to pack back cause I’m tired of this, I’m not coming to Germany to steal, I’m coming to pay them from my tax money, and believe me, taxes in Germany are a killer. They looked each other and said, fine, we get you, you speak very good German, how come? I said I learnt it. I arrived at some friends place near Dortmund in the morning, unpacked and finished from the road but full of hope.

Also im März habe ich mein Haus zum Verkauf gegeben, meine Sachen in das kleine Auto das ich hatte eingepackt und habe mich von Rumänien verabschiedet. Ich überquerte die Grenze zwischen Österreich und Deutschland irgendwo vor Mitternacht. Eine Polizeipatrouille in einer zivilen 5-Serie hielt mich an. Sie wollten, dass ich das Auto auspacke. Ich sagte, in einer nicht höflichen Weise, ich tue es, aber nur, wenn die mir helfen das ganze Gepäck wieder ins Auto einzupacken, weil ich einfach satt von Diskriminierung war. Ich komme ich nicht nach Deutschland, um zu stehlen, ich komme, um zu arbeiten und sie von meiner Steuer zu bezahlen Geld, und glauben Sie mir, Steuern in Deutschland sind seeeeehhhrrr Hoch. Sie sahen sich an und sagten gut, wir verstehen Sie, du sprichst sehr gut Deutsch, wie kommt es? Ich sagte, ich habe es gelernt. Ich kam am Morgen ans Haus meines Freundes an in der Nähe von Dortmund völlig fertig von der Reise aber voller Hoffnung.

Așa că în luna martie am pus casa la vânzare, mi-am împachetat lucrurile în mașină mică pe care o aveam și mi-am luat la revedere de la România. Am trecut granița dintre Austria și Germania undeva înainte de miezul nopții. O patrulă a poliției într-o serie 5 m-a oprit. Vroiau să despachetez mașina. Am spus, într-un mod nepoliticos, o fac, dar numai dacă mă ajută să împachetez pentru că m-am săturat de descriminare, nu vin în Germania să fur, vin să-i plătesc pe ei din impozitul meu, și credeți-mă, impozitele în Germania sunt criminale. S-au uitat unul pe altul și au spus, bine, te înțelegem, vorbești germană foarte bine, de ce? Am spus că am învățat-o. Am ajuns spre dimineață la un prieten lângă Dortmund, extrem de obosit dar plin de speranță.

The first week was blast of German bureaucracy. I was searching for a place to rent. Good luck with that Eastern Europe boy. Everybody was reluctant, only open to speak with me after they heard my income. When I found some suitable housing, they asked me for my German bank account. In Germany you need to be registered at the city hall and only with the confirmation later you can open a bank account, but with no home you get no bank account, and with no bank account you get no home. I tried to pay cash 6 months in advance. When they’ve seen the 200 and 500 Eur bills they went crazy, fake money, fake money. My face said everything. Germans don’t accept higher bills then 100. Even 100 Euros are hard to pay with in some places. They have always change, like tons of coins that are cumbersome to carry in trousers and some small bills of 5, 10 and 20 Euros.

Die erste Woche habe ich die typische deutsche Bürokratie kennengelernt. Ich war auf der Suche nach einer Wohnung zu mieten. Viel Glück Osteuropäeischer-Jungen. Alle haben mich direkt abgesagt, aber waren nur offen mit mir zu sprechen, nur nachdem sie mein Einkommen gehört hatten. Als ich eine passende Wohnung fand, fragten sie mich nach meinem deutschen Bankkonto. In Deutschland muss man sich anmelden und mit der Bestätigung später kann man ein Bankkonto eröffnen, aber ohne Anmeldung bekommt man kein Bankkonto und ohne Bankkonto bekommt man keine Wohnung. Ich habe versucht, mit Bargeld 6 Monate im Voraus zu zahlen. Als sie die 200 und 500 Eur Scheine gesehen hatten, waren alle verrückt, falsches Geld! Gefälschtes Geld. Mein Gesicht sagte alles. Deutsche akzeptieren keine höheren Scheine alsn 100. Sogar mit dem 100 Euro Schein wirds schwierig an einigen Orten zu bezahlen. Deutsche haben immer Wechselgeld dabei, Tonnen von Münzen, die schwer zu tragen in der Hose sind und einige kleine Scheine von 5, 10 und 20 Euro.

Prima săptămână a fost dedicată sublimei și deșăvârșitei birocrații germane. Căutam un loc de închiriat. Mult noroc Esteuropeanule. Toată lumea era reticentă când îmi auzea originea, dar foarte deschisă să vorbească cu mine după ce au auzit venitul meu. Când am găsit locuința potrivită, mi-au cerut contul bancar german. În Germania trebuie să fii înregistrat la primărie și numai cu confirmarea ulterioară poți deschide un cont bancar, dar fără locuință nu primești niciun cont bancar și fără cont bancar nu ai locuință. Am încercat să plătesc cu bani lichizi 6 luni în avans. Când au văzut bacnotele de 200 și 500 de euro, au început să facă spume și să spună bani falsi, bani falși! Fața mea a spus totul. Germanii nu acceptă bacnote mai mari de 100 de Euro. Chiar și cu bacnota de 100 de euro este greu de plătit în unele locuri. Germanii au întotdeauna mărunt cu ei, tone de monede care sunt greoaie și arată dezastros în pantaloni pe lângă bacnotele mici de 5, 10 și 20 de euro.

I got lucky that some polish guy wanted to rent his room for 6 months. For this guy it didn’t matter from where I was from or if I had a bank account or not. We signed the contracted and paid him the rent for 6 months and a safety deposit. With the contract I went to the city hall to get my letter of confirmation and 3 days later I opened a bank account.

Ich hatte Glück, dass ein polnischer Student, seine Wohnung für 6 Monate mieten wollte. Für diesen Mann war es egal von wo ich komme oder ob ich ein Bankkonto hatte oder nicht. Wir unterschrieben den Vertrag und zahlten ihm die Miete für 6 Monate im Voraus und eine Kaution. Mit dem Vertrag ging zum Einwohnermeldeamt, um meine Anmeldung zu erhalten und 3 Tage später hatte ich ein Bankkonto eröffnet.

Am avut noroc cu un polonez care dorea să-și închirieze locuința timp de 6 luni. Pentru el nu contade unde eram sau dacă aveam un cont bancar sau nu. Am semnat contractul și i-am plătit chiria pentru 6 luni și o garanție. Cu contractul am mers la primărie pentru a-mi primi scrisoarea de confirmare și 3 zile mai târziu am deschis un cont bancar.
