Silly News: Movie Studios Blame Rotten Tomatoes for Baywatch and Pirates' Poor Box Office

Almost spit out my coffee laughing when i saw this article where Hollywood producers are blaming the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes for the poor box office showing of Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Baywatch.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - "Insert fancy pirate catchphrase here"

The first two installments of Pirates of the Caribbean were good but they should have ended it when Jack Sparrow died. Now they're just milking the fans so Johnny Depp can pay his divorce settlement. Sad.

Baywatch

Okay, I admit... i used to watch baywatch in the 90s and early 00s but even i can't see the appeal of this one. They must be running out of 80s and 90s reboots with Miami Vice, RoboCop, Fame, Arthur, Footloose, Conan all done... There's probably more but this is just off the top of my head.

To be fair, they made half their budget in the opening week so it wasn't too bad of a showing. Still, the lack of creativity is apparent.

And one last thing...

Superhero movies and tv-shows... is it just me or have we hit peak superhero? Justice League, Thor 3, Wolverine 3, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, The Lego Batman Movie, Captain Underpants all slated for this year and these are just the movies... The line-up of superhero tv-shows is even longer.

Sigh... i'm missing the good old days when there was some original screenplay to look forward to. So much so, i've been watching a lot of foreign films lately. There are lots of awesome Korean thrillers, funny Thai comedies and everything under the sun Bollywood movies.

What was the best original Hollywood movie you caught recently? The only ones that comes to mind are probably Get Out and La La Land.

Sort:

So basically, they're crying that people were saved wasting their hard earned money on a bad movie? Good grief..

The Rock then goes on a twitter feud with some of the critics. Such self-entitlement. Movies at the cinema aren't cheap either... not wasting $30 on a substandard movie just so movie stars can live it up.

In my opinion, Collateral Beauty was also a very beautiful movie. And if you are into Bollywood movies, you must have noticed they are very much similar to La La Land with all the dancing and singing.

Ah yes, i caught Collateral Beauty on the flight back home. Beautiful story but i think the director made it a little too easy to guess the plot. I wonder how the book is though.

Haha I normally fast forward through the songs as nice as they are... the last movie i caught was Drishyam (sp?), way better than i expected. Any good Bollywood movies to recommend? I'm waiting for Dangal to be available here.

Yeah, Dishyam was really good and Dangal is also a must watch.
These are also good Bollywood movies - Baahubali, Talaash, Fan and Baby. I liked them all.

Talaash was terrific! I didn't know Baahubali was a bollywood movie but will add it to the list - seems to have broken a lot of box office records recently?

Unfortunately the copy of Fan i have has terrible subtitles. So it looks like Baby for this weekend!

That seems to be the way our society runs now... blame all failure on someone or something else. Not being accountable for our mistakes means we never learn from our failures. This means that the population gets dumber by each passing generation.

Now that you mention it, Idiocracy was a pretty good original movie from 10 or so years ago.

Yes, Idiocracy was one of the few movies that was created as a sci-fi comedy but turned into a documentary... Sounds funny but I believe it.

at this point hollywood is just recycling the dregs of its past. the best movies and tv are being made outside of the traditional entertainment industry meat grinder

I agree completely, thanks for the post!

Getting tired of all those superhero movies too mate. Looking forward to Guardians 2 tho, which I haven´t seen yet. Best movies seen recently: Nocturnal Animals, The Neon Demon ,The Place Beyond the Pines and Only God Forgives. Don´t know if you can consider all of them as Hollywood movies tho..
I feel a bit like there is not soo many god ones coming at the moment. Feels a bit like the money is more in series these days..

Haha nice movie list... i forgot about Nocturnal Animals. Yeah that was a good recent one. Have to check out Neon Demon.

Lol Only God Forgives was such a weird experience... reminded me of some of the cops i met in Thailand haha.

Haha finally I meet someone that has seen this movie! It was sooo weird but it worked perfectly for me. Neon Demon is in a very similar style, very weird. If you like more demanding movies like that Enter the Void is also a recommendation. Very intense film..
Surprisingly I got to say I also really enjoyed Urge with Pierce Brosnan which I have seen a few weeks ago. It´s easy to watch Hollywood stuff but quite refreshing and entertaining.

Haha don't think Ryan Gosling advertises that one too much on his CV. :)

Thanks @marcellus-wllace... i was seriously running out of movies. Will try to catch these over the weekend.
