Czech Republic in foreign films #2: The Illusionist (2006) [ENG/CZE]
I would like to welcome you to the second episode of my series of foreign films shot in the Czech Republic. This time, I will introduce you the places where the film The Illusionist was shot.
The Illusionist
The film tells the story of the forbidden love of gifted illusionist Eisenheim and countess Sofia. She is, however, already engaged with Prince Leopold, who obviously does not like her relationship with the illusionist, and so after one argument, Sofia dies. This is the start of a search for a culprit headed by Inspector Uhl. Eisenheim is not left behind, and to expose the murderer, he prepares the greatest illusion of his life.

You can see Edward Norton as Eisenheim, Jessica Biel as Sofia, and Paul Giamatti as Inspector Uhl.
Among the actors, we can find Czech names, which are not too familiar to me.
And now you will finally find out where the film was filmed in the Czech Republic.

Konopiště Castle
At Konopiště Castle (mostly exterior + corridor with antlers), Prince Leopold's residence was filmed.
Dobříš Castle
The interiors of Prince Leopold's castle were shot at Dobříš Castle.
Czech Krumlov
In Czech Krumlov, footage from Eisenheim and Sofia's youth was shot.
Prague Castle
Prague Castle in the film served as Schönbrunn Castle.
Prague
Other scenes were also filmed in Prague. E.g. The Vinohrady Theater served as the Vienna Theater, and National Academy of Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic served as the Police Headquarters. We can also see the main station in the movie.
Tímto bych vás chtěla přivítat u druhého dílu mého seriálu o zahraničních filmech natočených v České republice. Tentokrát vám představím místa, na kterých byl natočen filmu Iluzionista a že jich není málo.
Iluzionista
Film vypráví příběh o zakázané lásce nadaného iluzionisty Eisenheima a hraběnky Sofie. Ta je ovšem již zasnoubena s princem Leopoldem, kterému se její vztah s iluzionistou samozřejmě nelíbí, a tak po jedné hádce Sofie umírá. Tím začíná pátrání po pachateli v čele s inspektorem Uhlem. Eisenheim nezůstane pozadu a, aby odhalil vraha, připraví největší iluzi svého života.

A nyní se konečně dozvíte, kde se film natáčel v ČR.
Předem se omlouvám za kvalitu a velikost některých obrázků, ale nechtělo se mi je vytvářet a lepší jsem nenašla.
Zámek Konopiště
Na zámku Konopiště (převážně exteriér + chodba s parožími) se natáčelo sídlo prince Leopolda.
Zámek Dobříš
Na zámku Dobříš se natáčely interiéry sídla prince Leopolda.
Český Krumlov
V Českém Krumlově se natáčely záběry z Eisenheimova a Sofiina mládí.
Pražský hrad
Pražský hrad ve filmu posloužil jako zámek Schönbrunn.
Praha
V Praze se natáčely i další scény. Např. Jako vídeňské divadlo posloužilo Vinohradské divadlo na Náměstí Míru a v Národohospodářském ústavu Akademie věd ČR sídlilo policejní ředitelství. Dále ve filmu můžeme zahlédnout i Hlavní nádraží.

This movie is very underrated, Great film!!
Yeah, I agree.
The plot of the film (based on the novel, if I remember correctly) was inspired by Mayerling affair and other historical events from late Habsburg era, so using Czech locations (which used to be under the Habsburg rule at the time) was one of the rare opportunity for Czech locations in modern Hollywood films to be historically accurate.
That's interesting. But still, it is strange to substitute original building with another, e.g., Prague Castle = Schönbrunn Castle.
