Isaac Watts: La poesía de los himnos y cánticos espirituales"
Isaac Watts, prolífico compositor de himnos, basó uno de sus famosos himnos «Al contemplar la excelsa cruz» en Gálatas 6. Y otro de sus himnos famosos, «Al mundo paz», está basado en su reinterpretación del Salmo 98.
Al contemplar la excelsa cruz
do el Rey de gloria sucumbió,
tesoros mil que ven la luz
con gran desdén contemplo yo.
No me permitas, Dios, gloriar,
más que en la muerte del Señor;
lo que más pueda ambicionar
lo doy gozoso por su amor.
Si la riqueza terrenal
pudiera yo a mis plantas ver,
pequeña ofrenda mundanal
sería el írsela a ceder.
Aquel dolor tan grande y cruel
que así sufrió mi Salvador
demanda que consagre a él mi ser,
mi vida y mí amor.
