Cemetery Photos: Resting In Peace

in #cemeteryphotos5 years ago

My entry to #cemeteryphotos inspired by @melinda010100.

While driving to Elmira to see the Railway Museum, I saw this sign of this idyllic countryside cemetery.

Hubby and I stopped to look through the cemetery on the way back home. He thought maybe some of his relatives were buried there as his grandfather’s people were from this area. Cemeteries contain a wealth of genealogy information.

I, as usual, was looking for the gravestones with the Celtic Crosses on top.

Example of one style of Celtic Cross. I actually visited this ancient historic site in Monasterboice, Co, Louth when I was in Ireland about eleven years ago but lost my photos when the computer crashed.

Another Example of a Celtic Cross

This photo is of the Celtic Crosses on my ancestors’s graves in an old cemetery in Co. Mayo, Ireland. The stone structure is what was left of an old monastery. I took the photo on a film camera when I visited in 1970’s.

These are the kind of symbols I was hoping to find on the top of some of the older gravestones in the Kingsboro Cemetery but they were not to be found among the various headstones.

This one in the Kingsboro Cemetery has an interesting top. I’m not sure of the meaning of the star.

The cemetery is in the middle of a field. You can see a potato field in the background.

It was a peaceful place and two people were there grooming the grounds.

It’s sad to see the lovely angel stone as one knows a child has been buried there.

I always say a little prayer when visiting these hallowed grounds. While I was stopping by the little angel stone, I saw a young woman clipping grass around another one. I asked her what denomination belonged here.

She said, “Baptist.”

Hubby and I had a chuckle as his grandfather’s people were interred in a Catholic Cemetery but it was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the visit.

In closing the walk among the gravestones, a lovely blooming bush in the cemetery

I love those Celtic Crosses! That is a pretty little country cemetery. I'm glad you stopped.

No Celtic Crosses there but it was a pretty spot in the quiet countryside, Melinda. We did enjoy stopping there.

Cemeteries are such interesting places Redheadpei. I like reading the headstones too. Shame you lost your photos, I hate that when it happens.

Yes, I had some good photos of the Celtic Crosses in Ireland but when the computer crashed I hadn’t backed anything up.

Always interesting to see how diverse the tombstones can be from each other. Always makes me wonder what part of that person’s personality inspired what they ended up getting. Some of them are quite bold while others are plainer and blend in with everything else.

A good variety of tombstones. Some of the stones are fancy and would cost a lot more than the plainer ones. I guess a lot depends on how much money you left for your funeral or how much $$$ your loved ones have to spend on the tombstone. Some people buy their tombstone in advance and have it placed in the cemetery. That way they know there will be one.

Such a creepy place for a photo shoot. I guess if people didn't wamt to be on Instagram they would be burried in an unmarked grave.

It didn’t seem creepy as the sun was shining that day. Most people like to think they will be remembered. I didn’t show any names on the headstones.
A lot of folks are opting for cremation and no burial- either the ashes are kept or thrown over a special place.

That looks like beautiful cemetery Jo!! Looks like a mix of old and new interments. The film photo has a spooky yet cool look to it. Glad you decided to stop even though it was the wrong denomination...you had an enjoyable visit and a good chuckle!😉

It was a pleasant cemetery, Dee. Hubby went up and down the rows looking for some indication a relative of his might be buried there only to find out it was the wrong denomination. 😂

Howdy redheadpei! What a wonderful and peaceful tour of that country cemetery, that is a beautiful one and in a beautiful setting too. The Celtic crosses are amazing!

Hi Cowboy! It was a pleasant tour of the cemetery grounds. I never see the Celtic Crosses on the recent headstones, only the older ones.

Howdy today redheadpei! Why do you think that is? People are just getting away from their heritage or the old cross headstones cost a fortune?

I don’t think the monument makers offer the option as the cost would be higher and more time involved than making the regular rectangle stone. Just my opinion, Cowboy. 😊

I'm sure you are right redheadpei but it doesn't seem right does it? Not to have that style available anymore? I guess if you had enough money you could get one from Ireland!
