Daily Celestial Challenge - The Mexican Axolotl
The Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is an amphibian, some say it has a resemblance to a dragon and others say it looks like an alien, the truth is that this little animal of about 25cm comes from Mexico and is in critical danger of extinction, initially it was confused with a salamander. The axolotl is over exploited, almost causing its disappearance, it is consumed as food, used as medicine and even as a pet.
Unlike other amphibians, this strange animal does not go through a process of metamorphosis since it is a neotenic species, that is, it can reach sexual maturity while retaining its larval characteristics. The axolotls have horns that are not decorative, these are gills through which this animal breathes. This amphibian has another peculiar characteristic, it is capable of regeneration. It can regenerate its vital organs like the heart and the brain, besides regenerating its parts like tails, fins, among others. This is why this amphibian is currently being studied to apply its mechanism of regeneration in organs and parts of the human being.
The axolotl is bred in captivity as a pet mainly, it needs a minimum aquarium of 10 gallons capacity. the care is basic, similar to the care of tropical fish, because the axolotl is a very resistant and undemanding animal. It is essential to have the aquarium covered, as these animals tend to jump out of the aquarium. A temperature between 16 and 21 ° C should be maintained and a water filter should be installed and, if possible, artificial lighting.
As a food you can offer a diet based on animal protein, such as worms, worms, small shrimp and even pieces of chicken. Try to give them these frozen foods, not live.
If your axolotls reproduce, separate the large axolotles from the small ones, then, the larger ones will feed on the smaller ones. Similarly, axolotls with other types of fish should not be placed in the aquarium.
