How should we treat animals?
WHAT PEOPLE SAY
Some think that animals are at our disposal, while others believe that they should be treated almost like people.
A well-known defender of animals believes that they should enjoy the "fundamental right not to be treated exclusively as resources or economic assets" and that we should stop treating them "as mere objects".
A case that drew a lot of attention was that of the multimillionaire Leona Helmsley, who bequeathed 12 million dollars to her dog and left written in her will that when the animal died, they buried it with her.
Now, how do you think the animals should be treated?
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS
The Creator of life, Jehovah, commanded human beings: "Have authority over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth" (Genesis 1:28, Latin American Bible, 2011). It is reasonable to conclude that for God humans are superior to animals.

Just before the quoted verse we find a statement that supports this idea. The Bible says that "God proceeded to create man in his image, [...] male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27).
As this verse says, God made us to manifest qualities like his. That is why we spread wisdom, justice and love in a special way. In addition, we have a sense of good and evil, as well as a spiritual need, something that animals do not have because they were not made in the image of God. Animals are inferior to us, and God does not expect us to treat them like a human being.
Does this mean that we can mistreat them? Of course not.
In the Law that he gave to the Israelites, God commanded them to care for and protect their animals, to give them enough food and to let them rest (Exodus 23: 4, 5, Deuteronomy 22:10, 25: 4).
