DailyCelestialChallenge - Friday – LoveBeautyFreedom.
We use the word freedom on many occasions:
- "My parents do not give me freedom".
- "Talk to me freely".
- "I need more freedom."
- "They have too much freedom".
- "Economic independence gives freedom".
- "The offender has been released"
We usually consider freedom as the possibility of acting according to one's will or one's own desires. Normally, this means that nobody is opposed to us acting the way we do. We do not usually feel like lack of freedom the impossibility of walking for hours at the bottom of the sea or walking among the lava flows of a volcano. Moreover, it is often said that we are free to try and suffer the consequences.
In the above sense, freedom is defined as something negative, that is, as the absence of something. It is the meaning that derives from phrases like this: "you can go, nobody prevents you, you are free". But freedom, is it nothing more than that? Many thinkers have argued the opposite, and define a second sense of freedom, positive, which is the freedom to do this or that.
Some people oppose this distinction by arguing: "Is not it the same thing we said before? If nothing prevents us, we can freely choose between this or that." It seems the same at first glance, but in reality it is not. Freedom, in a positive sense, is freedom of choice. But we are not free to choose when we do not know the possible consequences of what we choose. Nor do we choose freely when we let ourselves be carried away by fear, fashion, customs or whims in our choices.
