Scratching is normal, and while it can be a little damaging to the house, it simply needs to be redirected rather than discouraged. Providing suitable locations and objects for scratching will help provide a healthy and sustainable scratching solution.
Not all cats are the same and finding the right solution that will let a cat enjoy their scratching activities can be hit and miss. Observing and taking a closer look into the items that a cat does enjoy approaching for a scratching sessions may give a clue. The surfaces will often be coarse and textured so that the claws may sink a little deeper for maximum traction. Vertical scratch posts are often a popular choice as cats love to stretch upwards and it gives a different experience to the normal flat surface experience.
