Breeding has been a foundation for the pedigree cat world for a many years. It first started out in the 1800s and is described as a relatively recent realisation as much of the enthusiasm and efforts would pick up many years later. After a few decades of breeding, the first cat show would be hosted in the United Kingdom, London in. This was just before the 19th century and had a fundamentally different atmosphere and approach to breeding in comparison to the present. This point in history would see the focus of breeding turn to the selective and calculated process where new guidelines would be set for show standards. This was widely received as the rules of the breeding realm and saw similar standards being set on an international scale. The international variation in pedigree standards is well known to the present day and most local breeders will understand this when reviewing their litters.

The early breeding scene involved domesticated cats that were available around the States and Europe. Many of these involved shorthair cats and Persians. After a few decades, the cat scene would find much diversity when the Asian breeds were exported to the other side of the world through various means.
