Seasoned cat breeders will be able to attest to this fact and it is a rare occurrence that any breeder will be able to see a positive financial gain over any year. Much of the costs relate to the general breeding expenditure. There is much to be spent on in the way of medical procedures, food, equipment and various vaccines that are required to keep the cats in prime health. Beyond this, there are additional costs associated with general sales and marketing that make the entire experience a non-viable endeavour for those wishing to make money from the hobby.

In addition to finances, an owner should understand that caring for a cat during its most vulnerable time is important. A pregnant or nursing cat needs as much support it can be given and this often results in a copious amount of time being spent to supplement the care of a cat. New breeders should set a schedule and dedicate adequate time when starting out their breeding programmes. Being on call at all times of day and night are also essential as there are no set times when a cat may give birth or may need assistance. They will often become vocal about this and it is up to the breeder to oversee this actively. This is especially true for inexperienced cats who will often struggle with basic nursing and care requirements for the new kittens.
