Have you ever thought about why it is cat's make that rumbling engine like noise, also known as "purring"? It's actually the most common sound cat's make and yet, we know less about it than meowing, chirping, chattering, hissing etc.

At the surface, we know that cats purr due to personal satisfaction and content. To you, the physical representation of the purr will feel almost like a slight quiver. Sometimes, it feels like a wave of calmness.

Most of the time, we assume that a purr can only mean a good thing, but that is not the case. In-fact, cat's use purring as a method of communication, to give indicators of their needs and emotional well being. This is difficult to understand because we like to think the best of our cats and find it difficult to accept that they may not be happy about something.

We can't know for sure what it is they're communicating, but with more contact and mutual understanding, you can make a pretty good guess!

Here are a few reasons why your cat might purr!

  1. She wants something from you. Either some TLC or food. Some people say that the purrs differ in sound and intensity depending on what it is they want!

  2. Pain relief or soothing. Believe it or not, cat's have a self soothing mechanism through purring, and when they are injured or felling unwell, purring can help with healing wounds, building muscle, relieving pain, as well as many other recuperative scenarios.

3.Happiness! Yes, this is the most common reason for purring, and you can usually read this from other non-verbal communication.
