Nova Scotia Becomes the 1st Province in Canada to Ban Declawing Cats
The Nova Scotia Veterinary Association has just amended it's Code of Ethics to make Declawing domestic cats illegal.
The decision will come into effect March 15, 2018
The association said this decision follows years of discussion by veterinarians, surveys and public input.
A recent announcement from the national association quickened the process for Nova Scotia. While many vets have already stopped declawing cats on their own accord, the new amendment will put an end to a practice that's been deemed unethical and causes undue pain and stress to the animals.
Europe and Australia have already banned declawing cats, hopefully all of Canada follows suit!
For a long time pet owners have had their cats declawed to prevent scratches on their furniture or carpet but the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association says, scratching is clearly normal behaviour. It also helps them with balance, climb and defend themselves.
Surgically removing 10 bones from a cat is gross, stop it! 🐈
I thought BC had also banned it but I can't recall for sure.

Claws stay attached! No detaching bones from cats!! Keep the cats feet in tact!!
Like really tho, in what world would a vet take all the toes off a dog? Sorry you don't need these nails anymore, you have been digging too much in the back yard, your punishment will fit the crime, we are cutting your feet off!
I can't believe people can do that !!! just for the sake of furniture etc...so so happy it's going to get banned...not sure what they do here in NZ (do I want to know?) Poor cats, they put up with so much from us. You have bought good news :)
It's not allowed in Aus so perhaps NZ is the same? I was glad to learn my province has banned it outright 😎
When you say it like that it does sounds pretty barbaric. Glad the practice has stopped, our cat definitely has its claws.

both of mine have their claws... they periodically prove it be pressing them into me in some sort of feline torture mode as they demand attention.

If you don't want your furniture scratched don't get a cat. If the cat mutilates your couch you mutilate the cat in return? Doesn't seem right, I hope BC follows next!

Agreed! This practise is barbaric! I have never in my life had a cat declawed. They have no way of defending themselves and having 10 bones removed is torture for the cat!
