A Taste of Durian That You Won't Regret! Bao Sheng Durian Farm @ Penang! (Part 2 of 2)

in #catalyst6 years ago

So, in Part 1 we talked about the type of durians, the taste of durians, and different taste of durian at different timing. Today, the owner will share with us how to plant a durian tree, from flowers to durian fruit. Basically, everything in and out about durian tree.

Those who are interested to join the morning farm visit are already gathered at the dining area. We meet one Singapore family over there and Tifa and the guy are sharing some hotel in KL. So, the owner brings us to his farm which is located just right below of all the villas. He started off with how to plant a durian tree that you want. For example, you wanted to plant a "Musang King" durian tree, you can't just plant by using "Musang King" seed. It might or might not become "Musang King" tree and I guess you wouldn't want to risk it as durian tree takes few years to grow durian. So, the best way of getting exactly what you want will be using grafting and budding method to plant. Durian tree that using such method will guarantee to get exactly the type of durian that you want.

This is "Black Thorn" durian tree and it just budding since Jan 2018

Durian since young!

Next, he explained to us the durian flowers, how a durian flower become durian fruit. He also mentioned that durian flower is edible, not the entire flower but only one of the parts is edible. Usually, one branch of the durian tree will have plenty of flowers but not all flowers are successful become durian fruit. Same goes to durian fruit as well, in a single tree branch you can't have too many durians because nutrition will get divided by all the fruits, as a result, you don't a good quality durian end of the day. Or the tree branch can't support too many durians and if the tree branch breaks all durians are gone too. Hence, only 1-3 durians per branch and when the durian started to grow in small size, his worker will use a long stick to cut them off and left few of them and let them grow into top quality durian.

Fishing net being setup in multiple area to prevent durian fall on ground

In order to keep the durian taste and smell good, the owner set up some fishing net to trap the durian to prevent durians fall on the ground and release the fragrance. Those durians or flower that on the ground will become organic fertilizer for the durian tree. Oh ya, not to mention this farm is using organic fertilizer and no chemical all. Organic durian tree you will notice it has more branches compared to non-organic durian tree.

We didn't manage to visit the entire farm, as the breakfast is ready for us already. In fact, I think no point to visit the entire farm as well because the owner has about 6 acres of lands and all the durians tree looks like to me. We went back to have our breakfast and have our next round of durian again! This round the owner choose about 7 fresh durians which they just collect this morning. There total 5 big baskets full of durians! Easily 60-70 durians!

Fresh durians from the owner's farm!

While we were still enjoying morning durian, we saw a few groups of new visitors started to coming in. They were lucky to have fresh durian from the morning! The owner's son brings them to tour around the place. The owner told us their fresh durians usually keep their in-house guest and only sell to durian seller on the next day if any. Because the ultimate objective for all visitor here is to enjoy and taste the freshness durians. Hence, he decided to prioritize in-house guest first which I think it makes more sense who will visit the durian farm to eat not-so-fresh durian?

Durian after breakfast!

Young 10 years old "Musang King" tree.

Besides durians are unlimited for you to eat as long as your stomach can fill. The fresh and young coconut is there for you too and unlimited as well. Other than durians, the owner also has rambutan and mangosteen if you want to eat these two you gonna visit the correct season. When we were there early in the April, both of them were not available yet.

Once again, we fill up our stomach with durians after breakfast! Time past really fast, is time for us to check out and we were a little bit unwilling to go back, we still want our durians! I think I will miss this place very soon! Hope to come back next year! :)

Definitely a place for me to bring friends and relatives to.. thanks for sharing. I love it that the business owner puts in effort to make it more of a retreat than a durian farm for a quick visit.

Yupe, you are right. The owner really passionate about durian and he did a good job on the show and tell. The place can fit total 26 person, so you may bring in lots of friends.
