A Taste of Durian That You Won't Regret! Bao Sheng Durian Farm @ Penang! (Part 1 of 2)

in #catalyst6 years ago

Hello! Mini durian for our souvenir!

This post is a long overdue post. We went on 1st & 2nd April and I have been busy with my professional work and volunteer events so now I must complete this post and get it up.

So early in April, Tifa and I went to Bao Sheng Durian Farm at Penang to celebrate her birthday there. We started our journey about 11 am at KL, the traffic is smooth because next day is working day and usually people went North on Saturday morning and back to KL on Sunday evening. So basically, our trip on Sunday is a good timing and the only disadvantage will be both of us need to take one day off from work.

This trip was planned since January when my friend told me about this place, she just random share to few of us and ask us whether we are interested to check out this place. She has never been to the place before but according to her sister said durian at there is really fresh, tasty, and we can't taste the same level of freshness in KL. After browsing Bao Sheng facebook page, few of us decided to visit the place and experience it. My friend went there around mid of March while I went there early in April.

3 reasons I plan to go on early in April.

  1. To celebrate Tifa birthday at there.
  2. March is our quarterly trip together within Malaysia (still acceptable even though we went there on 1st April).
  3. According to the durian farm owner, early April is a good time for durian.

Our villa from dining area.

Standard Villa!

We reach the farm about 2:45 pm and we proceed with our check-in. The place is quite modern compared to other durian farms, it has a proper reception counter with lots of fresh coconut ready to serve us, a dining area where everyone gathers and enjoys our durian, few villas, 2 swimming pools, and of course his huge durian farm.

Mountain water swimming pool! Very cooling!

The first thing we check in the room was the bathroom, we check the hot water shower tap and check the toilet bowl. The swimming pool looks greenish and there is some sand on the bottom. At first, we don't dare to go in, but according to the owner the water actually from the mountain which is few KM away from his farm. So he builds the piping at the mountain and connects all the way to his farm & houses so that he and his family can enjoy fresh mountain water. The mountain water indeed is fresh cooling.

After done with the inspection we went to the dining area and ready for the durian feast! Unfortunately, the owner's wife told us that fresh durian is on the way. According to her, they will collect durian 3 times per day. One in the morning like 5 am in the morning, one afternoon, and the last one in the evening. We waited for about 30 minutes and durian finally arrived at the dining area safe and sound! Since only two of us, the owner asks us to join the long table where he is sharing his story with another family so that we can taste more type of durians.

The owner arranges the durian from light to heavy taste.

He chooses about 6 durians for us. He put all of them on the table and arrange nicely. He then shares with us why he arranges such a way and how to choose a good durian and examine them. His farm has few types of durian namely "Lin Feng-Jiao" (Yupe you heard it right, she is Jackie Chan's wife), "Green Skin", the famous one "Red Prawn" and others. All of us are so curious why name durian as such, the owner told us that the name of the durian actually is based on things that famous at that time and just name it.

He then told us there are few tastes in a single durian and the taste will change according to the time that the durian is fall and the taste will change when durian being throw on the floor (like durian naturally falls on ground). So from here we already have 4 different tastes to try on and each of the taste is unique and very fragrant. He continues to tell us his story while all of us are enjoying the durian. The durian really really really very nice and I couldn't find a suitable word to describe the awesomeness taste of the durian!

Look at it! So big and the flesh is so thick! So yummy!

When we finished the durian is already about 6 pm and dinner will serve around 7:30- 8 pm. In our mind, we think how can we still have the space to eat dinner. After finished Tifa and I back room and rest for a while and unpack our stuff. After a while, we decided to swim at the swimming pool that it is just right beside our villa. The swimming pool not really deep and I think is about half of my body roughly 80-90 cm. The water is freaking cold and we just rest in the swimming pool and enjoy the natural beauty of the view and sunset as well. The villa is surrounded by trees and flower and the air is so fresh that we hardly get this is KL city.

After our dinner, the owner asks us again want to have another round of durian? I was like "omg, this is crazy! we just finished dinner and now durian?" Most of us didn't eat much for dinner because all of us waited for the second round of durian. This round the owner choose another 5 durians for us and the taste is similar to afternoon one.

This round only last for 2 hours because the owner wanted to rest and he told us the entire family usually sleep at 9:30 pm and wake up 5:30 am in the morning to collect durian from his farm. All of us also went back to our villa and get some rest and ready for next day activity and durian again! He told us to gather at dining area by 8:30 am if wanted to follow him to his durian farm.

That's all for Day 1! I know is pretty long, but I'm so excited to share the entire experience with you! Stay tuned for Part 2!

Look like delicious

I love durian. It's my favorite. There are many durian fruits here in my country, specifically in the Davao. It's the Durian capital of the Philippines.
Why was there some sand on the bottom of the swimming pool?

Hey @loudetteiam thank you for reading! The sand is from spring water on top of the mountain.

Wow! That's really cool how they built a swimming pool and the water resource is spring water from the mountain. Was it also cold, like the usual spring water?
