When we read the Christmas story the first words of the angel are, “Do not be afraid.” The first words of Harold Angel in the Peanuts comic strip are more humorous:

“Hi, Is Sally home?”

The angel in the Christmas story brought good news of great joy for all the people. This was his “herald message”. The message rings out today. We are happy about this or upset about that. We hear some news but no news is greater than the good news of great joy. This message was not just for people who invested in bitcoin early. This good news of great joy was for all the people. In the first century people were oppressed by Caesar Augustus. Today people are oppressed by fear and despair, a sense of loss, an empty sense of meaninglessness or inferiority. We all need good news of great joy. In Charles Schulz's spin off on Peanuts Charlie Brown’s sister Sally was in a Christmas play. It was Sally’s job to say, “HARK!!” and then Harold angel would come and sing. But Charlie Brown just couldn’t get it. He wanted to tell her that it is just a Christmas Carol, “Hark the Herold Angels sing. Glory to the new born king!"

Finally guess who comes to Sally’s house looking for Sally. That’s the punch line. I could never forget it. As I child I wondered who Herold Angel was when we sang this song in church. After watching the Peanuts Christmas special I got things cleared up. Here he is knocking at Sally’s door.

Actually Herald means to proclaim and that was the angel Gabriel’s job in the Christmas story to proclaim good news. He wanted to tell all the people but only a few people listened, Mary, Joseph, some shepherds and then special guests from the east bringing gifts to worship him.
