The Ford Supercar That Never Was

in #cars6 years ago

Ford has given us many amazing cars over the years, the Ford GT, Ford Lighting, Thunderbolt, and many more. Sadly, there's one amazing concept that never made it to production the Ford Shelby GR-1. Similar to the Ford GT, the GR-1 was a throwback. It would've been a modern take of the Shelby Daytona, and it would've been an amazing supercar.

Unlike the Shelby Daytona, the GR-1 was set to have 6.4L V10, with a midengine layout. The V10 that was used in the concept produced 605bhp and 501lb ft of torque, with a top speed of 190mph. In terms of performance it would've been close to the Ford GT, which would've made it a great second supercar for Ford to add to their lineup.

There are a few reasons why we likely never saw the GR-1, the main being Ford already had the GT. Unlike Ferrari, Lamborghini, and other car manufacturers, Ford isn't in the game to produce only supercars, or grand tourers. Also here in the states the primary Fords we purchase are the F150 and the Mustang, sure there would've been a market, but a majority wouldn't buy the GR-1. The other main reason would've been cost, they had a rolling concept, but in order to mass produce the GR-1 Ford would've had to modify one of their plants.

Honestly I think Ford dropped the ball on this one, the Shelby Daytona is a icon, and having a modern version, with better handling, breaking, and more horsepower would've been amazing. The Ford GT shows that Ford has the know how to make a supercar, so why not build on that. The GR-1 is a beautiful car, with performance to match, and I think it's sad that it never made it to the showroom.
