Next week, at Amelia Island, Bonhams will sell this 1973 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider at auction for an estimate price of $2,000,000, beautiful design by Pininfarina with a coachwork by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, the Italian coachbuilding company of 50's.
History of Ferrari Daytona Spider
First presented at the Paris Salon in 1968, the 365 GTB/4 is named unofficially Daytona in honor of the all Ferrari podium in Daytona in 1967 by the 330 P4. Pininfarina designed a shark-nosed styling with a full-width transparent panel for the headlamps, but was replaced by pop-up light for the American market iin 1969.
"The Daytona has been called the last great front-engined supercar." - L J K Setright, Supercar Classics, autumn 1983.
In fierce competition with the Lamborghini's 350GT (old post about this model), Ferrari installed an 4,390cc V12 engine with four overhead camshafts (/4) to produce 352 hp at 7,500 rpm. This model hasn't the power steering, inappopriate for a real sports car. But for the US market, air conditioning was optional, but elsewhere the Daytona remained focused on high performance only.
The Daytona was capable of over 274km/h, the world's fastest production car at the time. Only 123 Spider convertibles had been constructed when production ceased in 1973.
