History of Toyota 2000GT

The Toyota 2000GT was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965, a huge shift in the automobile industry. Japan can design a gorgeous two-seater sports car not only inexpensive economy cars. The 2000GT was a collaboration between Toyato and Yamaha known for its motocycles. Yamaha wanted to produce a sport car for their first car.

The prototype was designed by Raymond Loewy, the designer behind **Studebaker ** and his protégé Albrecht Goertz. Yamaha presented it to Nissan that declined, contrary to Toyota who accepted provided that the design is reviewed by their own designer, Satoru Nozaki.

"One of the most exciting and enjoyable cars we've driven" - Road & Track magazine in 1967

Only 351 examples were built in two years of production. At this time, the 2000GT was sold for $US 6,800 (more than Porsche and Jaguar models).

Exciting early Japanese sports car. I didn't know they were in the high end market this early.

It was also a surprise for me :

It was $1,000 more expensive than both the Jaguar E-Type and Porsche 911, and $2,500 more expensive than a Corvette.
