1957 Porsche 356 A Speedster
Back to the classic with this 1957 Porsche 356 A Speedster with a coachwork by Stuttgarter Karosseriewerk Reutter... It heads to auction through RM Sotheby's during its Essen Sale (Germany) next month for about € 300,000.
History of the Porsche 356 A
In 1956, the Porsche 356 was replaced by the heavily modified 356 A and was proposed on the market with five four-cylinder engines:
- 356 to 1300 (44 hp),
- 356 A 1300 Super (60 hp),
- 356 1600 (60 hp),
- 356 A 1600 Super (75 hp),
- 356 A 1500 GS Carrera (100 hp).
The upgrades made to the 356 A were part of the Technical Program 1 or T1 with a curved panoramic windshield in one piece and a modified front-handle handle with the Porsche logo. The Speedster was an idea of Max Hoffmann, American car dealer famous for Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing. He wanted light version of the 356 with no side windows and a small windscreen for amateur club racers. The model was sell less than $US 3,000.
Specification
This Porsche Speedster 356 A has a 1,600 cc engine from a 1965 356 C producing more than 100 hp. Only 1,171 examples were produced in 1957.
The coachwork was designed by Reutter, a German car body factory bought by Porsche in 1963 (Recaro remained with high-end seats). But the minimal design was a problem during rainy days with the removable side curtains, so the top was rarely used.
But perfect on the road during sunny days :-)...
