Next month, during the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance Auction, Bonhams will sell this splendid Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2-Liter Roadster for about $80,000.

History of the Jaguar E-Type

The E-Type was introduced at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show. An immediate success... Enzo Ferrari was even rumoured to have told "the most beautiful car ever made". The model was produced between 1961 and 1975 in three series with technological improvements learned in racing from the D-Type.

The body and chassis is a monocoque tub just like the D-Type with a 3.8-litre six-cylinder Jaguar XK6 engine. With its light weight and the aerodynamism by Malcolm Sayer, aircraft engineer , the E-Type's performance was better than the XK150.

Technical specification

In 1964, the 3.8 litre engine was upgraded to 4.2 litre DOHC inline six cylinder engine with 3 SU HD8 carburetors delivering 265 hp for a top speed of 241 kmh. This 1966 model has five-speed manual transmission and four wheel independent suspension.
