Capstone, Artemis Program and the Gateway NASA is seeking for their Lunar Moonshot!
A microwave oven–sized CubeSat weighing just 55 pounds will serve as the first spacecraft to test a unique, elliptical lunar orbit as part of the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE). As a pathfinder for Gateway, a Moon-orbiting outpost that is part of NASA’s Artemis program, CAPSTONE will help reduce risk for future spacecraft by validating innovative navigation technologies and verifying the dynamics of this halo-shaped orbit.
- The orbit, formally known as a near rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO), is significantly elongated.
- Its location at a precise balance point in the gravities of Earth and the Moon, offers stability for long-term missions like Gateway and requires minimal energy to maintain.
- CAPSTONE’s orbit also establishes a location that is an ideal staging area for missions to the Moon and beyond. The orbit will bring CAPSTONE within 1,000 miles of one lunar pole on its near pass and 43,500 miles from the other pole at its peak every seven days, requiring less propulsion capability for spacecraft flying to and from the Moon’s surface than other circular orbits.

Interesting as Mama Gates got Bill's foot in the door of IBM as she was on a "charity" board with Jon Opel of IBM.

The cislunar environment is about to get much busier and with this increase in traffic comes an increase in the demand for limited resources such as Earth based tracking of and communications with assets operating in and around the Moon. With the number of NASA, commercial, and international missions to the Moon growing rapidly in the next few years, the need to make these future endeavors as efficient as possible is a challenge that is being solved now. Advanced Space is aiming to mitigate these resource limitations by enabling the numerous spacecraft in the cislunar environment to navigate autonomously and reduce the need for oversubscribed ground assets for navigation and maneuver planning.
Advanced Space has partnered with NASA to develop and build the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE); this mission will demonstrate the core software for the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System (CAPS) which is currently being developed in a Phase III of NASA’s SBIR program, and will primarily serve as a pathfinder for Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO) operations around the Moon.
The NHRO is the intended orbit for the NASA’s Gateway lunar orbital platform – as such the CAPSTONE mission will validate simulations and confirm operational planning for Gateway while also validating performance of navigation and station-keeping for future operations.
This mission will demonstrate an efficient low energy orbital transfer to the lunar vicinity and an insertion and operations approach to the NRHO that ultimately will demonstrate a risk reducing validation of key exploration operations and technologies required for the future success of NASA’s lunar exploration plans, including the planned human return to the lunar surface.
CAPSTONE will fly a 12U cubesat developed, integrated, and tested by Tyvak Nanosatellite Systems carrying a payload communications system capable of cross-link ranging with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), a dedicated payload flight computer for software demonstration, and a camera.
