Illinois Lawmakers Discuss Cannabis Legalization at Public Hearing in Chicago

Legislation proposed by State Senator Heather Steans would legalize possession of up to 28 grams (roughly an ounce) of cannabis and allow dispensaries to sell cannabis products.

The legislation is supported by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, who stated that she favors legalization of the plant because of the racial disparity in arrests and convictions of drug offenses.

Chicago Public Schools had their budgets cut by millions in 2016. Interestingly, when that budget was made CPS needed to fill a $300 million hole in the budget by August of that year.

That particular piece of information makes the following piece of information more interesting: guess how much money Colorado schools got from cannabis sales and other taxes? If you guessed $300 million, you are correct. Ding ding ding!

Illinois is on the verge of becoming the first state in the US with a junk credit rating. It certainly seems to me that a state with that many budget woes may want to consider legalization of cannabis. The Chicago Police Department certainly has more important things to do than busting people for smoking a little weed.

Hopefully can get it legal here in Ohio, and really legal so any and all adults can grow or deal any amounts, not that fake legal shit that costs as much as blac kmarket

Yeah, I hope so too! I'm kinda glad the last attempt failed, though. That was a cash handout to a few big companies. I would prefer just straight-up legalization, but I suppose we have to take what we can get.

Ballot access really is not that expensive. I disagree that take what you can get. Perhaps if still 90s then i wouldnt disagree. But General Social Survey has shown a majority of people want it legal. Time to work for what's right not sit inactive while kleptocrats delegitimize state action.

Maybe that's not a good decision

What isn’t? Legalizing?

Very Nice and informative keep it up
Keep following me @sohailomi

It's about time they legalize it... everywhere!

You are correct! 😁

Fingers crossed, we have voted on it almost every year lately and it still isnt passing. They are taking their time to try to figure out how to get the most taxes out of the whole thing

Isnt taxing cannabis for good causes such a great concept!! Cannabis really does heal the nations, not only by smoking it, but also the revenue can bring in good money and fix whats broken. Im so hopeful everyone gets on board. Especially since most cannabis dollars produced is usually local. Its a win win for everybody! And if anybody still thinks there is negative consequences to legalization, man they just need to go move to Lousiana or maybe even the Philippines. Always love your content @marksheppard.

Thanks! And yeah, as long as we have a system with taxes and budgets and everything, it'd foolish to leave all cannabis sales to the black market, where there are no taxes.

It’s funny over here in cali. Before legalization every body was like “tax my cannabis “ now it’s legal and everybody be saying “wtf are these taxes!” 😂😂

I think that’s part of the problem with using the allure of tax money to promote legalization. Some people were quick to mention the tax revenue that could be collected because it made legalization more appealing to those sick with reefer madness. At the end of the day, I don’t think most people actually think the high tax rates on it are fair.

I like to think that once we see a federal lift on the prohibition of cannabis that we will then have a chance at a fair taxation rate. As it stands right now the taxes are a little gouging... especially to the bud toker that aint got 5 extra bucks... Peace

I believe this to be some wonderful news. I am a resident of the midwest and our cannabis laws are still radically stupid. Illinois is in such a load of financial problems as a state that this becomes a no brainer.

Plus legalization would provide a huge reduction in trivial arrests. Did you know that while Illinois ranks nowhere near the top in terms of the number of cannabis users, the state makes more arrests, per capita, than any other state. This is absolutely ridiculous and needs to end.

Lets hope they can come to an agreement and make this happen.

Peace,
The Last Sage

I'm also in the midwest, though I try to keep that quiet because I post so much cannabis material. We do live in the cannabis dark ages around here. Hopefully not for much longer!

Leave it to us drop out stoners to bail out the failed system.

haha. The weed makes us chill enough to see things through the lens of reality and common sense unlike politicians.

Hopefully Illinois needs to do something to keep people im a glassblower and if they legalized i might even stay in Illinois

haha I know right? I want to move sometimes to where weed is legal and there are dispensaries everywhere, but a lot of those places are really expensive to live in. I am also anchored to where I live by owning two houses right now, so it's not just as easy as getting up and moving.
