What is Live Resin? The Connoisseur's Choice
The rapidly evolving world of cannabis extracts can be intimidating to a novice. Terms like BHO, distillate, terps, and rosin can make things confusing for a new patient just seeking relief, or an old hippy who's used to rollin up a simple doobie. Medical marijuana has come a long way over the last decade and though it seems overwhelming, the advancements in the industry have made for healthier administration, and brought us the means to tailor the medicine to specific needs of patients. It's an exciting new era for cannabis, and in order to take full advantage of all it has to offer, you need to be familiar with different products.
So what is live resin? It's the bees knees! The cats pajamas! Basically, it's the champagne of cannabis concentrates. It's often confused with rosin,(which is made by squishing dried bud between to hot metal plates retrieving the oils that are released) but it's very different. It's known for having a superior flavor profile to any other concentrate, but most people don't understand how it gets that heavenly flavor.
Live Resin is made in the same way as BHO, or butane hash by running butane over the dried product, and then allowing the infused butane to purge off in a low temp oven. The drying, or curing, process when harvesting cannabis, is vital to the flavor, and medicinal value, especially if it's to be smoked or vaped. The downside to this, is that at least 50% or the beneficial oils, or terpenes, are lost during this time. While traditional BHO extracts are made with these dried buds, live resin is extracted with fresh buds that have been flash frozen, and kept chilled through the entire process. This retains all of the terpenes the flower has to offer, creating a superior flavor, and medicinal profile compared to regular BHO. The product comes out a somewhat buttery consistancy, filled with sparkling THC crystals. Live resin doesn't usually turn to glass or shatter like other extracts simply because it's overflowing with terps. Also, live resin doesn't usually exceed about 70% THC, but it makes up for it with hypnotizing flavor, and aroma.
The only downside to live resin is price. Live resin doesn't yield as much as other extraction methods, and also the equipment necessary is incredibly expensive. Because of this it will always cost quite a bit more that other dabs, and will be harder to find. Don't let that discourage you! Definatley give it a dab, you won't regret it. The tantalizing aroma, irresistible taste, and sedative effects make live resin the true connoisseurs choice.

Good article. Straight facts. Except for one area. Live resin should be the “champagne of extracts,” but since the market won’t let us have nice things for very long, I’m already seeing live resin on the market that is similar in price(and quality) to any other budget wax. Stuff that’s like the Cook’s Sparkling Wine of live resin. So one still has to be careful. Especially in states like California where testing is all over the place. It’s safer here in Oregon, but I’ve had some garbage live resin here too.
I know exactly what you're talking about. I've seen placea selling shatter as live resin. A lot of people just run fresh buds without deep freeze or proper equipment to keep it cold and still call it live resin Here in az most dispensaries have at least one good live in stock it's just expensive. Consumers need to educate themselves just like any other medication.
Cool article, but I say no to butane!
Generally I smoke solventless concentrates, but I can't say no to the live resin! It's just so tasty!
While some like to argue that rosin is solventless, I do love me some good terps!! When I shop for dabs I try to make sure they have a terp profile.
What state are you from?
i've actually heard of people making live resin with c02 which is solventless as well, but I can't imagine it tasting as good as BHO live resin. I'm in AZ, I work at True Harvest, we're the largest indoor cultivation facility in the state.
Yeah I prefer bho over any other of the processes. I make a lot of rosin with the kief I get from work.
Nice! What do you handle there? I just do contract trim work here in WA for a couple different producers
Yeah that's what I like to do with my kief to. I'm just on the grow team. Me and two other guys have a room we're in charge of. Our room has 60 1000 watt lights and around 500 plants in coco
Live resin is very good. It is great to see the community valuing quality over price.
I really like the we have a high quality concentrate option that isn't horrible for your health. Smoke on!
Thanks for stopping by!
I like live resin
Live Resin is always the way to go! ;) Great article!
