Progress on an oil painting: glazing skin color
Layers of glaze will gradually enrich this painting.
The top photo shows the underpainting in Prussian blue. Underpainting skin tones in Prussian blue is not something I invented; it was used during the Italian Renaissance to create the warm/cool contrast in skin tones. For extremely pale people, earth green was often used, especially by the Flemish, for the shadows.
On the lower picture, you can see the result of the first warm glaze over the cool blue. It is still weak, and will take a number of layers to render the form. Each layer must dry completely before going on to the next.
I have also continued glazing the flowers:

Thank you c-squared, much appreciated.
lovely work - and I "envy" your studio (compared to the dungeon I work in, lol).
This process is tedious, taking a long time, but the end results are worth it! A sort of jeweled look that is impossible to get any other way.

Thank you Otto, I am very happy in my little perch, especially so since I designed it myself. It is so nice not to need electric light.
beautiful painting, thanks to the process, I can observe the impressive work you did, it is a very interesting technique.
Glad you stopped by and found the technique interesting; thank you.
Gorgeous !
Thank you @nehab.
It is so interesting to see that you actually started colouring the skin with a blue undertone. I wouldn't have guessed it if you didn't show us the progress, because the end result of the girl's skin is so nicely painted in rich brown colours.
Nicely done, as always, Kathleen :).

Hello Scrawly, it is a technique that was taught to me by my teacher years ago, who was a fabulous painter.
if you look closely you find the blue undertone shimmering through in the shadows. Just applying paint to a white canvas appears flat in comparison.
OMG <3 <3
a lot of details and patient putted in here
i love it so much, even the composition, great work my friend :D
Many thanks @edanya, I think I am a little more than half way there.
The only other time I've heard "Prussian blue" was when I watched Bob Ross.
Another wonderful piece of work.
Thank you. I have never watched his show but I thought he was mostly a landscape painter. Maybe he used it when painting sky or water.
I love seeing the layers build up and I really love this painting overall. You are so good at combining your subject with such lovely layers of colour and activity.
This looks a marvelous place to paint. It's so sunny and bright.
Thank you @donnadavisart, the new studio is a joy. The difficulty of this type of painting is getting the whole thing to go in the same direction and getting every element to support the others.
Very lovely @kathleenscarboro ! I love your style so much ! The girl is well painted and the framing of the flowers and nature motif is well done <3 It is also lovely to see the differences after the glazing of the skin colour * ___ *
Also to see the canvas in the studio gives a frame of reference to its actual size, which is really neat ! Wonderful post <3
Thank you so much for your kind comment and encouragement, @veryspider. I will be working on it all day today and tomorrow, Then let it dry for a few days before going back to it.
