It was a fascinating place on the refuge (was a volunteer there for 5 months)-lots of all sorts of wildlife to find. Mostly noted for birds but also a lot of insect life as well. They try to mimic the ancient flooding patterns of the Rio Grande River thru the area as well as they can with all of the farming/ranching land surrounding it.

Thanks for volunteering there for so long. That is interesting about mimicing the the flooding patterns of the Rio Grande River. Did it work? I would be like a kid in a candy store there with all of that wildlife.

It's not perfect as they have the refuge divided up into different fields that they flood/grow plants for the wildlife but it's about as good as they can do with civilization in the area. In the old days the river would just meander and flood the area-now it's well-controlled for better or for worse. Water is very precious in the dry southwest.
