Happy butterfly (or moth) day
A short little post to show some little critters on a Thursday evening @butterflyday and maybe pick up some SBI courtesy @whatisnew. I spotted these moths on some coyote willow branches last Fall while I was a volunteer at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico.
There were hundreds upon hundreds of these moths in the refuge for several days, a good many providing food for the birds and some even for the catfish in the waterways as well. Not sure what species they are but they were fun to watch.
Not as colorful or splashy as the Tiger Swallowtails that occasionally flutter by here in Arizona but pretty neat all the same.

Wow! These are amazing and what an experience to see so many of them at one time. I don't know what they are but I am definitely going to do some research and I will let you know if I find anything about these beauties. What a special treat! Thanks for using #butterflyday tag @ultratrain! : )
It was a fascinating place on the refuge (was a volunteer there for 5 months)-lots of all sorts of wildlife to find. Mostly noted for birds but also a lot of insect life as well. They try to mimic the ancient flooding patterns of the Rio Grande River thru the area as well as they can with all of the farming/ranching land surrounding it.
Thanks for volunteering there for so long. That is interesting about mimicing the the flooding patterns of the Rio Grande River. Did it work? I would be like a kid in a candy store there with all of that wildlife.
It's not perfect as they have the refuge divided up into different fields that they flood/grow plants for the wildlife but it's about as good as they can do with civilization in the area. In the old days the river would just meander and flood the area-now it's well-controlled for better or for worse. Water is very precious in the dry southwest.
I like their bold stripes i would be doing a double take for a split second wondering if they were a bee with that kind of coloring.
