Thursday is Butterfly Day Giveaway: Week 10. Butterfly Scarce copper /

in #butterflyday5 years ago
Today I will show another butterfly photographed at a summer cottage in July 2012. These flowers of pink thistle attracted a lot of insects. Of course, we were interested in beautiful butterflies.
The brightest among them was this butterfly.

I, as well as others, tried to identify butterfly with the help of the Internet. I suppose that it is the Scarce copper (Lycaena virgaureae). This is a butterfly from the family of Lycaenidae.
These butterflies have a pronounced sexual dimorphism. In my photo the male Scarce copper. Females have not so bright wings with a pattern of spots not only at the edges, but also in the center.

The undersides of the wings are paler with specks.

The Scarce copper is found on the greater territory of Europe, is absent only on the Iberian Peninsula. The species is common in Asia, Siberia, the Far East, and lives in the Caucasus.
In Moscow, these butterflies began to meet less and less, and in 2001 the species was listed in the Red Book of Moscow.

The time of flight of the Scarce copper: mid-June - August. So it is not surprising that we met her in July.
Very beautiful bright butterfly. I took a few photos and then I stood and just admired the Scarce copper until he flew away.

What a bright beauty! The male butterflies always seem to be the ones. with more color. I know firsthand that butterflies sure do love thistle flowers. What is the Red Book of Moscow? Endangered species? Thanks for using #butterflyday tag @eto-ka! : )

Thanks you!
The Red Book of Moscow is an analogue of The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, but for plants and animals in Moscow.
The status of this butterfly - 2nd category - a rare species in Moscow with a decreasing population.

I figured that was what the Red Book of Moscow was. How cool is it that you were able to find a rare species but I am sorry to hear that it has a decreasing population. Thanks for the info! : )

Love the colors!

They are really beautiful.

Greetings from Mexico.
