Crisps or chips?

in #busy5 years ago

I was feeling a bit peckish this afternoon and raided my cupboard to see what snacks I had at home. I was a bit surprised by what I found as I had totally forgotten about some of them.

Before I move on, let's have a cultural lesson first. These are packets of crips. Us Brits call them crips, but our cousins across the pond call them chips.

This is what we call chips in England. Hence we have our famous Fish n Chips!

So to summarise,
British crisps = American chips
British chips = Amerian fries

Easy peasy!

Now, let's take a look to see what I found in my cupboard. Walkers crisp is the most popular brand of crisps in UK. They have over half of the crisps market. This is a 175g large pack of the standard ready salted flavour. I can't remember when I got it, but I think my sister must have bought it over for me when she came out in March. When me family come and visit, I always get them to bring me foodstuff from back home. The best before date for this was over two months ago, but I'm not too fussed with these dates. I've had crips a year after their best before date and they were fine. Ready salted is my second favourite flavour, so now I've found them, I expect they'll vanish very soon.

I bought this last week because I didn't realise the ready salted packet was hiding away in my cupboard. Although Fish n Chips is our national dish, I've never had fish n chips flavour crisps before. I was very intrigued when I saw them, and have to say quite surprised when I tasted them. It bought a little smile to me face as you can actually taste fish in the crisp. There's also a hint of vinegar as we add salt and vinegar to our fish n chips. I might buy them again when I run out of stock.

This is Lays Crisps (Chips), the America brand. They're the main foreign brand of crips in Taiwan and they do many local flavours. This is a salted egg flavour. Salted egg flavour snacks have become a hit in Asia in recent years. This is a limited version, that's probably why I bought them..... but I can't remember when. I don't think it would have been that long ago because their best before date is the end of September. I'll get round to them later on.

Saving the best for the last.

This is my most favourite favourite favourite crisps, Walkers Cheese & Onion flavour. When I went to Japan for holiday last November, my sister flew out from England to join me. I asked her to bring two packets for me. That's two big packet, and each packet has 6 smaller 25g packets. This is my very last packet, and I've been saving it for a special/emergency occassion. Like last year before I got my November stash, I was low on stock. I think it might have been around this time of the year, I had a real shitty day and that's when my precious stock come out. Luckily, things haven't got that bad recently, so I'm still holding onto my last bag even though the best before date was six months ago 😛

Let's hope I don't need to call upon it too soon as I have no one to replenish my stock in the near future.

This was a fun post @livinguktaiwan. Having worked for a British firm for 14 years, I had a lot of opportunity to trade jabs with my fellow "British Empire" compatriots over the meaning of a lot of words - those who worked in Australia, South Africa, Canada, America, and of course some of the "flavors" of dialect on the British Isles themselves (Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Yorkshire, Cornwall ...)

Fun was had by all wrestling over the "King's English" ... 😉 Lost count of how many times I would listen to an exchange (between the Aussies and the Yorkshire men was particularly fun ...) and think, "wow, I think I know what they mean, but I would never have used those words to express it ..."

So ... "Crisps, chips, and fries" ... Indeed. A long time ago, but thinking back, probably my favorite was the "boot" and the "bonnet" of a car ... 😊

P.S. "... a bit peckish ..." You weren't hungry were you? Haha ... 😉

How about when the Americans say in a meeting , "ok, we'll table this for discussion" and then close the meeting. And the Brits say "yes, lets table it for discussion" and start talking about it. That must have caused some confusion for everyone 😊

English is such a fun language !!

Yep @livinguktaiwan ... 😉👍

You make me feel like raiding my cupboard now! I like how you said "cousins across the pond", haha... and another cultural lesson I learnt when I came to Belgium - the "French fries" are actually "Belgian fries"... ;)

Belgian are famous for their fries but somehow people seem to say French fries more than Belgian fries. Did they hijack it from you guys 🤔

One legend goes that some American soldiers got to know the fries in the war from the French speaking Belgians, so they started to call them French fries. :) But I’ve no idea where the fries were first made.

Chips. End of story.
