Wednesday Walk: paying respect to Buddha relics at Wat Bovorn,

in #busy5 years ago (edited)

This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay. Before and during the New Year, Buddhists in Thailand will go to temple to make merits and pay respect to Lord Buddha statues. One day before New Year’s Eve, I felt the urge to visit some temples in the old part of Bangkok. The sun was setting but I hoped these temples would be opening late specially for these few days for the New Year chanting ceremonies. Luckily, being late was beneficial as I could easily find a parking space and there was no traffic jam. Sometimes, being lazy or procrastinated could turn out okay! I know I should not indulge in this habit too often.

I went to Wat Bovorn , around 7pm, to pay my respect to the Buddha relics at the Royal Diamond Residence where the Buddha’s hair relics and bone relics have been enshrined for about four weeks. This was the first time that Lord Buddha’s hair relics have been allowed to leave Sri Lanka. These have been on a loan from the Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka to mark the 700 years’ relations between the Thai and Sri Lanka Buddhists. I made the right decision to wait in one of the tents as there were hundreds of Buddhists queuing for their turns to pay their respects to sacred Buddha’s hair and bone relics.

It took less than twenty minutes for people on our tents to be ushered quietly up to the shrine room. People’s demeanors were very polite and reserved with humble gestures towards each other. I was so glad to see city people being able to slow down and become calmer than usual! Many people brought along jasmine garlands to place at the table in the shrine room.

They only allowed sixty people into the shrine room at one time. We had to stand to rows of ten people in front of the shrine. There was a staff telling each row to approach the shrine to pay respect and place their flowers on the table. Then, each person would walk slowly in front of the shrine to pray for a minute and they would walk quietly out the other door. This process was repeated several times until all rows of people empty the room. Then, another batch of sixty people would enter the shrine room. The organisation and planning including the logistics were very impressive. This would go on until midnight on New Year ‘s Eve.

I took some pictures of the documentary about the Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka and the ceremony taking place there for inviting the sacred Buddha’s relics to Thailand.

Initially, I went to the temple as I wanted to have a quiet walk around there. But I realised later that I was so lucky to be in the presence of such wonderfully sacred Buddha’s relics which would take many hundreds years to be in Thailand once again. This was a once in a life time experience that’s why hundreds of Buddhist were wearing all white and waited patiently for hours under the hot sun during the days.

A few days ago I talked to a learned monk as he had just paid respect at the shrine room last week. He told me that Lord Buddha gave his hair to only two Indian Buddhist merchants in his life time. These relics were later donated to the Buddhist Monastry for safe keeping. For devout Buddhists, being in the presence of Lord Buddha’s relics is as holy as being in the presence of the Lord Buddha while he was preaching among his monks. We know that here would be many high ranking angels guarding these sacred relics. For really psychic people with pure hearts, they would certainly feel the special energy and vibrations in the surrounding atmosphere.

We were given one minute to pray and make positive wishes in front of the shrine. I could feel some faint tickling electricity running down my body while standing there. I was walking with a walking stick as I had very bad back problems, I just came out of hospital. To my surprise , I could walk much better and faster than my snail pace. My heart became lighter and the stress of ill health just vanished. I looked at my face later and found a much happier face with cheerful eyes. I could not recognise myself for a while. I haven’t felt this way for years; the last time I had a spiritual changes in my brain was during my meditation retreat at a very holy place. This really signifies a beginning of the New Year and new chapter in my life. Positive energy surrounds my heart and I have only positive thoughts! Incredible. I hope this will last several months at least.

Wat Bovorn by night. I was the only one walking in the dark night, looking at the crescent moon and smiling all the way to the car park.

The whole temple was inundated with freshly cut orchids and flowers; some staff told me that they were decorating the temple for the all night chanting on New Year’s Eve. Hundreds of Buddhists would be joining in the over night chanting for the New Year. I caught the whole team arranging flowers through out the night.

I really like the ambience of the temple at night. Much cooler and more peaceful. Art work seemed to stand out more in spot light.
