Weekend Freewrite – March 16 2019 - Single Prompt Option – Pound Cake
Can you eat pound cake if you are trying to lose weight? Can you eat pound cake as part of a healthy diet? Should pound cake even be allowed on the planet if it makes people fat?
Once again I have to look up the freewrite prompt word on wiki. I am much less knowledgeable that I thought I was, and I thank @freewritehouse for continually pointing this out to me.
According to the wiki listing for pound cake:
Pound cake refers to a type of cake traditionally made with a pound of each of four ingredients: flour, butter, eggs, and sugar. Pound cakes are generally baked in either a loaf pan or a Bundt mold, and served either dusted with powdered sugar, lightly glazed, or sometimes with a coat of icing.
So, this is a pound each of four ingredients. Should you eat it?
The fitinfun(food) theory of eating is
- eat less crap
- eat more nutrition
Let’s look at two versions of this cake:
Version One
- gmo flour sprayed with round-up
- butter from factory cows fed with chemical mash, hormones and antibiotics
- eggs from factory chickens fed with chemical mash, hormones and antibiotics
- sugar from gmo beets sprayed with round-up
Don't eat Version One
Version Two
- organic flour
- organic butter from grass-fed cows
- organic eggs from free range chickens
- organic pure cane sugar
You can eat Version Two
If you see pound cake in the store in plastic wrapping, check the ingredient panel. If there are more than 4 ingredients, don’t buy it.
If you see pound cake in a local bakery, ask them how they make it and where they source their ingredients. In my experience, you have a 50/50 change of being able to eat it.
If you are trying to lose weight, eat all your new healthy food and then if you feel the need for pound cake, or it turns up somewhere and you want some, eat a slice if it is Version Two.
During the time I was successfully losing weight, I was not in any situation where pound cake, or any cake, came up. I was way too busy learning about healthy food, learning to prepare it, enjoying eating it, and thrilled with my weight loss to be thinking of cake.
Later, now that I am in a healthy place in my life and food. I probably would not be tempted. This plain white cake does not sound appealing to me. If the "coat of icing" had organic chocolate in it, I might try it.
My suggestion is to work on getting the optimal amount of the 31 essential nutrients each day.
If you are like me, and other successful healthy eaters I know, once you get these nutrients, you will be fulfilled and not running around looking for cake.
NOTE: Some of you might want to tell me that your cannot trust that "organic" food is really organic and better for you than the other products I mentioned. I agree. But do not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Do the best you can, where you are, with what you can find. Giving up is a bad plan if you want to be healthy.
