This is the forth in a series to explain to my friends how Steemmonsters works, here are the other 3 if you need to catch up!

#101-1 Steem Monster Rules - 101 (The Beginning)

#101-2Steem Monster Rules - 101 (The Battle Rules)

#101-2Steem Monster Rules - 101 (Your Monster Levels Matter))

I realize different people have various knowledge levels of the game, so I decided to do a series of different posts to break it down and simplify it. If you are familiar with it, then you will find this boring. But if you are new, then hopefully I can make it simple to see how it works.

Steem Monster Rules - 101 (Amazing Abilities And Strategy To Use Them)

red-diamond.gif

Rule #1 - Pay Attention To Each Monster's Abilities

As you have noticed by now there are many abilities that most of the monsters have. The key to understanding them and how to maximize their value is to pay attention to what each ability does and at what level you gain on any particular ability. Some are "offensive abilities", like increased melee boost for "INSPIRE"; while others are "defensive abilities", like "GROUP HEAL" from the Divine Healer. (See pics below to see how you know what ability your card has at any particular level)

Defensive Ability

And don't forget, as mentioned in the last lesson:

Each monster has a group of stats and potential abilities that get stronger as the card gets more experience (aka "gains levels"). There are 2 ways for your monster to get this experience (defined as XP):

#1 Monsters can earn experience through playing in @steemmonster hosted games (both individual battles and tournaments). Each time a card is played it will earn something in these contests, but the exact definitions are yet to be disclosed. Suffice it to say that they will cater to both the avid player and the casual player, and find ways to make both grow over time!

#2 Monsters can earn experience through "merging" with other cards of their production run. So for instance, if you have bought the "alpha edition" cards already and you have 2 Level 1 Medusa's. You can combine the first Medusa with the second Medusa and make a brand new card that will be a Level 2. (NOTE: as you go up levels this gets much harder and requires many many cards.)

I am reminding you of these 2 points because it is VERY IMPORTANT to check how high (or not) you want to level your monster to get a particular ability. This is majorly part of the game strategy and each monster has different levels that are optimal. Unless you have an unlimited budget, then you should match your monsters to 1) no higher than your summoner level and 2) get the abilities and stats you want to play your team with.

Rule #2 - Know What Each Ability Does

In order to understand the value of an ability, you much learn about that ability and how it affects either your team or the opposition. To help you do that, I've taken the abilities from a list posted by @yabapmatt of Steem Monsters that defines all the abilities:

Rule #3 - Develop Your Strategy Based On Your Abilities

In the list of abilities I've highlighted in red 2 abilities to give you an example of how these abilities affect strategy, "Sneek ability" and "Snipe ability". (see pic above) Both of these two abilities affect the PLACEMENT of your monsters in your lineup, so understanding them is very important and will make a big difference.

Let's go back and look at our sample team from the last 2 weeks. The reason is the last monster in the lineup (Fire Beetle) has "Sneek Ability".

sample red team.png

Now lets look at the definition of "Snipe Ability" again:

Monsters with Snipe will attack the first Monster on the opposing Team that has Ranged or Magic attack. Only Monsters with Ranged or Magic attack can have the Snipe ability.

So this means that your Snipe monster will most likely attack the opposing guys behind the tank (Note: most "tanks" are melee attackers, but there might be some magic tanks used on limited occasions). This can be a very powerful tool as it can do damage behind the tank and maybe even take out a range or magic opponent. Remember the name of the game is to dish out as much damage, while at the same time reducing your own.

Another note is that you will almost never place your SNIPE in the first position as it 1) probably has range attack (which can't fire from the first position) and 2) most likely has small levels of health to withstand an attack against it. Essentially the goal is to "hide" or "bury" the snipe in between monsters with higher health so that it can fire away at the opponent while taking no fire itself.

The positioning of monsters in your lineup will require you to think of a) what works best between the monsters you've chosen and b) what you think your opponent will field against you. There is no exact perfect lineup that beats everything, so a lot of this game strategy is essential to figuring out how to win. It is also very encouraging to even the small players, because even if your team isn't expensive it can still take down a bigger opponent if the opponent doesn't also pay attention and focus on maximizing his own abilities.

This ends today's basic lesson. These are 3 rules that I think everyone should know when first starting out with this very cool game. There are other posts that you can get more info if you feel you are ready to go to the next step, like this one:

Steem Monsters Gameplay Mechanics Revealed!

I will be doing a followup where I expand on the topics discussed soon. I like to give out info in smaller bites so that people can consume it easier. But I also encourage anyone to ask any questions below in the comment section and I will be happy to answer to the best of my ability.

Also if you haven't seen a match with the cards yet, check out this match with me and @yabapmatt. It shows how awesome this game is going to be, and just remember we are all still very much in the beginning! No real gameplay has even started yet ;)

Great guide and synopsis of the fighting...we are getting the @davemccoy Steem Monsters volumes for Newbies, excellent job once again sir. Which is great, because when this comes out everyone is a newbie.

Thanks @cryptkeeper17! I'm excited to work with you on the upcoming project too :)

So having played a little bit of the game, do you think the best positions for any sneak attacker would b 4th and snipe 3rd? Sneak goes after the last man in the line up correct? do any of them hit the 3rd and or 4th one. Melee the fist, ranged the second, snipe-magic users, sneak the last man?

Yes... unless you have a 5th choice if you go really small mana guys... I would try to always keep my snipe protected as much as possible since he is usually range and usually small health... The one exception is if you use the Spirit of the Forest, I think she can handle herself in the 4th slot ;) (she's a beast of a snipe and I like her a lot here on that) :D

On the second point, given the 4 choices you gave (which there are many potential combos)... I'd put the snipe-magic guy in front of the ranged guy in the 2nd hole unless you have a beast of a tank that will last the whole game... The reason is if your tank goes down, the 2nd slot will move to the first, and then your range guy will cease to attack anyone. Lots of moving pieces, but that is what will make this game fun :D

Okay a couple of strategy things to think about thanks.

Oh my @davemccoy. That is soooooo much to get our heads around. I still haven't got to grips with your last lesson yet.

Thank you for writing them though. I am sure I will be returning to them again and again. 😊

lol... Just keep getting familiar... It will come to you really fast when you actually start playing... this is all abstract right now, but the more you learn now, the faster the rest will come to you :D

the more you learn now

I'm trying. I'm trying @davemccoy. But time is not on my side! 😂

But I will keep on keeping on as much as I can.

The more people who read your awesome gameplay guides the better. Resteem for sure!

Thank Doc! I appreciate the compliment and thank you very much for spreading the word too :D Have a great weekend!!!

The Fear ability could be a great asset against someone who is using a Peaceful Giant as a tank to shield ranged attacks.

Absolutely a great point... I haven't thought that far ahead, but you are correct. Its the anti-dote to that big guy... Kill everyone around him and he will die a slow death :P

5am here. My brain starts faîling. Will add it to my reading list for tomorrow (although I still haven't completely processed the previous one)

Posted using Partiko Android

Well of course, get some sleep and get that brain rested :D ... And we have plenty of time to get you going in the gameplay! Good job on your contests too, they are going to be very helpful to getting others to understand as this gets rolling ;)

In all due respect, Iam trying to figure out how this Game will make us more money with Steem and Steemit.

To put so much time in a game seems a little bit of a waste of time. Sorry, I do not mean to be a debbie downwer, but learning the blockchain and posting in my blog and commenting is enough for me. I can barley keep up with that.

Maybe Iam seeing this all wrong. Can you make more Steem or SP with this game ??

I do not see how you guys have enough time to learn all this craziness involved with a silly game lol

It is ok for you to have that thought... I can understand why you would feel that way.

First, let me say that everyone should do what they want to do. Not one person here is obligated to do anything in particular for either Steem or Steemit to survive. So if you feel it or anything is a waste of your time, then by all means do not do it.

Second, I would actually argue the opposite. I think this game has the potential to bring thousands in not millions of people to the STEEM blockchain. Not everyone wants to "learn" how Steemit works, nor do they care about doing posts on their blogs. But if they put money into Steem Monsters by buying the packs/cards and participate in the community, then they are doing more than many to make Steem succeed. In other words they are ADDING money into Steem, vs. many that just TAKE money from Steem.

Finally from a community aspect, there are many people that like to share things. This is one of those things. Some like artwork, some like living in the wild, and some like to work together to make this game something special for all of us.

And to your question about "Can you make more Steem or SP with this game??", the answer is ABSOLUTELY YES. In fact I would argue that I have made more by trading the cards (gameplay hasn't even started), than I made in 10 months on Steemit. And there will be many prizes for the games and tourneys too. And ps... don't forget that they have a voting bot that upvotes good posts about Steem Monsters that pays far more than almost every bot out there (and no charge).

So with all due respect to you @robertandrew, I think you can find answers if you look hard enough. It is up to you whether or not you consider this something that is worth your time and is silly or not, that is what makes life worth living. Its called "free will" and everyone can have it! :D

Have a wonderful day and feel free to ask me any questions about anything and I will do my best to answer!

I have finally caught up Dave, but I have to say that it was a lot to take in at once because I read them back to back of course. I think the best way for me to grasp the gameplay is to actually practice rather than the digest the theory of how the mechanics work. But I'm probably wrong on that right? At least I know we have the right guy on the job😄
