So by now you guys should know that I'm a psychologist and a Fundition associate but what you don't know is that ... I'm also a LIGHTJOCKEY.

So What is a Lightjockey?

First of all I think it's a job with little or no recognition at all, which is sad actually.

The lightjockey is the one who will work behind the scene to play with every lights in the room. You have to set the light right so that it will fit the mood, or guide the people to dance according to the right mood.

If the Dj sets the right music and makes the show for your ears then the Lj is the one who makes the show for your eyes.

If in music/songs there are a drop point then the LJ has also to know them and to play the lights according to the drop in the music.

The LJ has also to set the lights according to the size of the room and to think before the show on how the lights will affect the show. You can not randomely set the lights or you will destroy the mood or not exploit the room at its best.

Working tools.

The LJ has few things in his hands to make the room visually good.

  • DMX Box
  • MyDMX software
  • Lyre Varytec (my personal use but there are plenty other brands)
  • Wallwashers
  • Akai APCmini (my personal use also)

My personal history with LJ.

Well I started maybe 2 years ago. My brother is a Dj and at first I didn't like to follow him to shows, nightclubs etc. Then one day he asked for my help for a show and I said OK. Little did I know that he wanted me to be the lightjockey, I thought I only had to set the stage and help him pack after the show.

So that night, after around 15min of briefing here I am...standing in front of the pad, doing the lightjockey thing with my instinct.
So now I am also a Lightjockey at SoundLyte (my brother company), of course during these 2 years I got to learn so much more on the job.
Follow him @deejay-k

So why Funny Lightjockey?

First of all, I started with absolutely no knowledge on this job and I got my first gig after a 15min briefing. Yep, he kinda threw me into the ocean that night.

Second, I can't stay at my place for the whole night. Usually I will set all the lights before the show starts.
Then once the show starts I will play with the lights for like a whole song and then go to dance or drink. Then get back to my pad for a whole song and then go away again. I just CAN'T stand still at my place. My brother has to always look for me (Shame on me I know but you know...I just love dancing too much haha).

What to do before a show?

The LJ won't just come to the room on the D-Day and set stuff.

  1. Get the gig
  2. Ask pictures and informations about the show room.
  3. Ask pictures and informations about the stage.
  4. Ask if there is only ONE DJ or other artists.
  5. Make a proposal for the lights
  6. Once it's OK work on MyDMX software to set "lights play" (usually it takes about 5hours to make it perfect)
    7.D-day set all the lights.

Got to Lightjockey here last saturday.

It was a monastery until the 1899. After that some businessmen in industrial bought it to make it an Art show sanctuary. And until now it's still an art show sanctuary.

This is an interesting job actually. It’s amazing to see how everything changed just because of the lights.
