Sounds like your dad did the best he could with the skills he had. It's clever to learn from his mistakes.
I agree that you need to keep on learning. Everything is always moving. If you stop learning, you fall behind.
There's a good book that talks about this: The Red Queen:Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature.
