It works the same as markdown in steemit. I use it all the time. Create your post in steemwriter and then just copy/past .
I actually have never used markdown, I use the editor option on Steemit. I have HTML experience, so I suppose it shouldn't be too difficult.
HTML works pretty good in [steemwriter]
but then again, it kind of goes against what Steemit should be striving for (and I know they are), simplicity so grandma can use it.
I just made a short post to test, no problems here.
