Buddha's Body in Ansimsa TemplesteemCreated with Sketch.

After the cremation of Buddha, small parts of Buddha's had been dispersed to the whole world of Buddhism. There were mysterious things happened after cremation. Small balls were found after cremation. It was named Sarira. I heard Sarira meant the body of the dead from Steemians living in India. Anyway, in Buddhist countries, Buddha's Sarira is believed as the most sacred symbol in Buddhism. So Korean monks in ancient times were eager to get Sariras from India.

In this Ansimsa temple, Buddha's sarira was believed to be preserved here.
Buddha's sarira was located behind of Daewungjeon Hall.

Buddha's teeth and some parts looking like ball were preserved in the Bell-like Stone Stupa.

Around the Stupa, the sculptures looking like soldiers were standing at the four directions to protect the Stupa

It was not allowed to get closer. I needed to photograph from far away.

It's so mysterious @slowwalker but I don't really understand it because I'm from another part of the world and I'm a Christian. May I ask something: If, after cremation, parts of the Buddha have been scattered around the world and are not visible, whereas they can be located in particular place? How could the balls remain after the cremation? These balls that were found - called Sarira? These statues of the guards guard the beads left over from the Buddha?

It is purported that after a person is cremated (specifically a holy person, or such as someone with a high meditative attainment) there are often left behind pearl-like relics. You can read about them here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%9Aar%C4%ABra

As for how this can happen, there is evidence that under certain conditions of heating, human bones can form crystalline structures. But I don't think that the process is fully studied or understood.

Śarīra
Śarīra is a generic term referring to Buddhist relics, although in common usage it usually refers to pearl or crystal-like bead-shaped objects that are purportedly found among the cremated ashes of Buddhist spiritual masters. Relics of the Buddha after cremation are termed dhātu in the Mahaparinibbana Sutta. Śarīra are held to emanate or incite 'blessings' and 'grace' (Sanskrit: adhiṣṭhāna) within the mindstream and experience of those connected to them. Sarira are also believed to ward off evil in the Himalayan Buddhist tradition.

@slowwalker This is an Amazing and Beautiful post about Buddha. I learned things from this that I never Knew. Wonderful Detail and you did well photographing this from Far Away.......

The idols look like many ancient statues and these ancient idols are in any Buddhist temple in the whole world.

Isn't the philosophical view of different cultures and religions fascinating? I am in awe that these most sacred parts of Buddha are cremated and nobody has thought about stealing them, in hopes of some twisted notion that this is the right thing to do.

I try to honor other religions in thier beliefs.

Thank you once again for sharing your knowledge on the different temples! It is absolutely fascinating being surrounded by all that ancient history, steeped in religion!

Have a nice weekend!

@slowwalker, Exactly right. In our country Buddha's Sarira was the most sacred symbol in Buddhism many Buddhists believing yet. So increase publicity some sarira's showing to people via relics exhibition only two or three times per year. There are most protected sarira in Ansimsa Temple. In fact steemians luck to see through your photography.

Thank you so much for your explanation.
I am interested in the Sarira stupas of Korean temple.
